Overall this start to a series shows promise and I am intrigued and interested in seeing where this goes. Elise wants nothing more in life than to NOT be married but after the King threatens her deadly-ill father’s treatment she has to accept the negotiations.

Of course, with me having read the spin-off first, the big plot twist came as no surprise to me but I tried to not let it influence my judgement. It’s often mentioned that because she is not the heir, she can have affairs or have children while unmarried. like missing sentences, random jumps between chapters/events, characters showing up in a scene when its never mentioned that they are present, information presented in a way that assumes the reader is already aware of it, and just inconsistent pacing.Recently I have struggled to find some books that have great plot as well as being well written and this both. She is shown in the start to be rebellious, reckless and brave, but at the times she needs to be brave she almost appears naive, weak and acts as a “damsel in distress” that needs saving. After the 65% mark the pace picked up way more so the end piqued my interest to see what happens next, but I’m not biting at the bit to read more.

When her uncle holds the life of her deathly-ill father over her head, reluctantly, Elise puts her fate into the hands of Legion Grey, the handsome and mysterious dowry negotiator. Filled with luscious world building, banter-filled romance, and epic battles, this first book in the Broken Kingdoms series is part Viking, part Beauty and the Beast, and perfect for fans of The Shadows Between Us. This might be a fantasy novel, and alt right imagery in itself does not mean that the author must be alt right, but the themes and issues discussed all have real world connotations and impacts. The world building I think needs the most help, this is supposed to have Vikings in it and I’m not getting that at all from this.I has some variety but it’s really the same plot so far, almost done with book 2 and it really resembles most of the tropes. This is the tendency of white people to either consciously or subconsciously separate themselves into ‘good’ white people, who are not racist; and ‘bad’ white people, who are. For example, she is supposedly the key to curing Legion/Valen of his curse, and when he manages to cure himself in spite of this she is still lorded as the saviour. However, I have a major issue with it, and looking through the reviews it simply does not seem to have been addressed. Will I read next I will try hoping that author took more time to polish writing story, eliminating stilted wording.

Except the man who is supposed to choose her future husband is someone who she can’t help but gravitate towards. There were moments of interest but the "poor me, no one treats me as a real person" whining by Elise got old. The characters were fantastic and the world building showed great potential but because these are dependent on the writing something was amiss. There were also a couple repetitive plot points (example: the Agitators rising up and getting quelled, rising up and getting quelled…), and the characters just weren’t deep enough for me to really feel connected to them.
