As we learn, there was plenty of scary stuff to come and for some reason the author just jets us away from it all unexpectedly. Although I did enjoy these sequences, they go on for just a tad too long and perhaps another edit would have moved the story on at a slightly speedier pace.

I really think the reader was left with such a whiny convoluted mess that she did not have a chance for a great performance. This is a novel about space travel, sure, but it’s also about other things: ‘‘Murder, suicide, confusion, and chaos without an explanation or any reason. team leader claire kovalik, our unreliable narrator with a tragic backstory, is not looking forward to this transition at all, so when the opportunity to prolong the mission presents itself, she digs in despite the protestations of some of the members of her crew. In the end, Claire’s part in the story holds up well, but the ultimate reason for the Aurora’s plight is slightly anticlimactic and rather low-key, even if it does fit with the overall mood of the book. Claire is the captain of a small maintenance repair ship which travels the outer boundaries of known space, where she has spent her entire adult life, with rotating Firefly style motley crews.

And, I won’t lie, several of of these scenes have stuck with me and popped into my mind at inopportune times when trying to get to sleep, even days later. I had the definite impression that the rest of the crew isn't exactly 100% mentally healthy either, but I'm not sure this is developed as well as it could be. A. Barnes being chatted about on Twitter and Goodreads, I couldn’t help but have my interest piqued. When they see the ship they were prepared to see dead bodies but they see bodies not dead to exposer but dead to being brutally murdered.

It almost feels like the author got up to speed on the horror of the situation and then slams on the brakes, cutting all tension and suspense off at its knees. Titanic meets The Shining in this SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn’t yet ended. The fact that my spouse and I are going to be buddy reading this off your review just fills my heart so, so much!
