We then follow the toymaker’s bloodline into 1996 when John Merchant (Ramsay pulling triple duty) is a famous architect, who is plagued by dreams of hell that he uses to litter his work on huge skyscrapers. I've done my best with Barker's literary efforts, some are fairly straight forward… others are a bit out there for my sensibilities.

Hellraiser (Blu-ray Review) - The Digital Bits Hellraiser (Blu-ray Review) - The Digital Bits

A much more modern take on the Cenobites could have been fascinating and nuggets remain in the sadly recently departed Anthony Hickox’s finished film – the infamous Black Mass scene is brilliantly composed and shot and delivers one of the strongest images of the entire franchise, hinting at a glorious clash of modern intangible belief and faith in the much more tangible flesh; and the notions of modern technology clashing with the ancient powers and creating a bizarre, demonic take on biomechanics are wonderfully and intriguingly queasy…yet sadly nuggets are all they are. What's left of Frank -- and it really isn't that much -- convinces Julia to help it regrow its body so that they can continue the affair they started before Larry married her.The track never sounds perfectly full and rich, something achieved to a greater degree by Anchor Bay's Dolby TrueHD track. And even the fact it starts and ends in space – the butt of every franchise gag in the last thirty years started here methinks – even works well with the final reveal of the Elysium Configuration in all its glory. Included in it are interviews with special effects designer Bob Keen, image animator Geoff Portass, Ashley Laurence, Doug Bradley (Pinhead), director of photography Robin Vidgeon, producer Christopher Figg, and director Clive Barker, amongst others. If you somehow missed out on the now out-of-print releases of the first three films or the Steelbook release of this film, it’s a nice alternative – and it’s good just to have the disc back in print.

Hellraiser (2022) - Blu-ray

Barker is particularly engaged with an evocative bit of crosscutting, in which a flashback to Julia’s affair with Frank is interspersed with a sequence in which Larry tries to move his and Julia’s marital bed up into their bedroom. Overall this is a stacked set that sees Arrow really going out of their way to provide some real additional value for the many they’re aware will already have the previous versions. A glut of self awareness and cynicism has invaded horror films in the last three decades, but none of them even come close to quality, the craftsmanship, and the sheer unsettling nature of Hellraiser. The supplemental features on the disc include original trailers and TV spots; two audio commentaries; archival featrettes; video interview with actor Doug Bradley; video interview with former Coil member Stephen Thrower; and more. Violence and sex are intimately linked in the horror genre, though Hellraiser takes this connection to a remarkably explicit level. While I would love to see what a new 4K scan or even a true UHD with HDR presentation could do for the colors and black levels - I'm still overjoyed the film looks as good as it does with such an impressive transfer.

Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment is on 4K Ultra HD™ blu-ray from Arrow Video in both 'Limited Edition' (pictured above) and 'Arrow Exclusive Limited Edition' and will be available from the 23 rd October, and will also be available in 4K on ARROW-Player. Century Studios has provided us with the first official trailer for David Bruckner's Hellraiser (2022), Jamie Clayton, Goran Visnjic, and Hiam Abbass. Bloodline’s workprint isn’t the mythical first cut of Kevin Yagher unfortunately and doesn’t really do that much different from the theatrical cut (running the same duration almost) but it’s a really nice get for the set. The plot has far too many holes and dead ends and raises more questions that it answers, thanks in no small part to the removal of 30 mins of footage from the first cut of the film that caused director Kevin Yagher to walk away from the final film – the relationship between Angelique and Pinhead is now woefully ill-defined and makes little sense, their interesting old school/new school versions of hellish ideologies and their conflict that results now little more than a few scattered lines of dialogue; the lack of focus now on the second box also undermines much of the hunt through time of the Merchant family; and the final act back in the 22 nd century simply didn’t have the budget to realise it as anything other than a very cheap looking stalk n’ slash denouement, with little of a finale to Merchant, Angelique and Pinhead’s centuries spanning storyline. In 1987, author Clive Barker made his directorial debut with “Hellraiser,” adapting his own novella, “The Hellbound Heart,” looking to bring his own brutal sensibility to the screen.Image Entertainment's Blu-ray release of Hellraiser doesn't stack up to Anchor Bay's now out-of-print release. Barker is in sync with a hunger that’s especially taboo now: the desire to be objectified and dominated. So while those inherent source issues remain however – grain haters will feel their skin crawl and there are real fluctuations in terms of those picture characteristics, which are nothing to do with the quality of the transfers here – and should be made aware to casual viewers, fans of the films and owners of previous discs will be more than pleased with the picture improvements of this new 4K release.
