I did like the initial part but the romance was a bit icky and I also found it sad that this fabricated story was needed when the real historical person this was based on was supercool already. Also, the prose contains too many ordinary details (things like the character takes the mug, slices a cake, cleans this, does that) that disrupt the reading flow without adding much of value.Alison Cockburn is a friend of David Hume (that great figure of Enlightenment Edinburgh) and his sister Katherine. The Edinburgh Skating Club is an engaging read, in which discussions about art, politics, love and gender are woven deftly into the plot. These events continued until1956, and competitors included Howard Nicholson( Sonja Henie's Coach), the Swiss brothers, Jacob (Jacques) and Arnold Gerschwiler.
