A little slow to get going, but when it did it had the staying power of what I have come to expect from Kath. I don't really understand the hate around this book, because I thought it was a good story and I really enjoyed reading it. Dreamer Nellie Morris spends her days typing and her nights sheltering from the German bombers screaming overhead, imagining a bigger world beyond her East End London roots--and a burgeoning romance with an American airman offers hope beyond the end of the war. At least James Patterson puts the real author on the cover, even if his name dwarfs theirs on the book, to let you know it was picked by his publishing group. She also starred in and produced the popular Netflix mystery film franchise Enola Holmes and its 2022 sequel Enola Holmes 2 .

The actress recently told Women’s Wear Daily that while she prefers to keep her life private, Nineteen Steps feels like an opportunity to connect over something significant with her fans. Kyle said that it was “part of the celeb culture” to front products such as perfumes, clothing ranges, beauty lines and food products that celebrities might not have been involved in the technical side of creating. I did not mean to vilify ghostwriting as I know it happens in all forms of entertainment and is a very respectable position. Ghostwritten celebrity novels have ruined children’s literature and now they’re doing the same thing to adult fiction.

Through Nellie, we see what it was like for East Enders during the war and how the tragedy shaped the community. People love to attack people who trigger them and Millie is young, beautiful, famous and rich,” Catherine Yardley, author of Ember, told the Guardian. Part three is a relatively short denouement that does a great job not ignoring or effacing the past trauma, but showing how someone can pick up the pieces and try to move forward. The New York Times bestseller from iconic Emmy-nominated actress and producer MILLIE BOBBY BROWN: Nineteen Steps is a captivating novel inspired by the true events of her family's experience during World War II. Decades later, the tragedy was finally acknowledged, and in 2013, on the 70th anniversary, a memorial service was held for the victims at St John on Bethnal Green church.

The story is so emotional and raw; you really feel the loss and the grief that main character, Nellie Morris experiences and at times, it was hard to stop my eyes from tearing up. Brown wrote the book with the help of Kathleen McGurl, a historical fiction author who has written 13 books of her own, including a forthcoming novel. This book kept me interested throughout and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole story, plot twists and hard to predict ending. Each time, they were denied by the British government, which put the blame on the council following the mass deaths. Brown refuses to shy away from the realities of war in her coming-of-age story, exploring love, loss, and courage in a way that is both bold and intensely moving.

I understand that the ideas came from Millie Bobby Brown and whilst also appreciating that the book will gain more sales with her name on it, I do believe that Kathleen McGurl deserves a lot of credit for this. Nearly 300 people became trapped in the pileup, with layers of bodies wedged into the stairway and landing. There are so many indie authors who are still dreaming of the opportunity to even get published, and all it took for Millie was for her to flash her money around 😭. She has been featured in the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.Nineteen Steps centers on Nellie Morris, an 18-year-old girl living with her parents and siblings in East London during the war. This book has left a sour taste in my mouth and I’m struggling to get over how it’s been publicised. Eighteen-year-old Nellie Morris counts every day lucky that she emerges from the underground shelters unharmed, her loving family still surrounding her.
