Story maps are a really powerful resource for children who are still developing their reading fluency. They also help teach children about story structure, a very important part of learning to read. Eliot is mild-mannered and quiet- by day- but a major force for good by night. Of course, it is possible that Eliot simply has an overactive imagination!Well, over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be diving into another superhero themed book. I am sure you can guess from the title of the post- ‘Eliot- Midnight Superhero’ by Anne Cottringer. Anne spent most of her childhood playing baseball, climbing trees and going on adventures. After her geography degree from the University of Western Ontario, she got itchy feet and moved to London and became a freelance film technician. She received Dip.Ad. from Slade School of Fine Art and a M.A. from Royal College of Art. Use words like First, Second, Next, Then, After that, Finally to begin your sentences. You can also number your sentences. I have decided to change this week’s writing task as we are approaching the end of our superheros topic and moving on to aspects of our theme on Flight after half term. This week, I have assigned two different activities- one on Eliot- Midnight Superhero and the other on a new book titled Supertato by . You only need to attempt one of the activities.

Like Megaboy, Eliot is just a normal boy who has special powers and uses his clever skills to help others. He reminds me of every one of you as you are all superheroes in your own way. Read a favourite superhero story or comic as suggested by the children. What do they like about this story? Print off the template so children can make a poster advertising Eliot’s services. Eliot Jones is a MIDNIGHT SUPERHERO! He's an expert swimmer and can save ships! He's an expert pilot and mountain climber and can save the whole world from a meteor!

Cripes! Planet Earth is in DANGER! It’s on a fatal collision course with Planet Pea! If they crash then Planet Pea will explode into a gazillionpillionkillion peas, and that means only one thing . . . there’ll be PEAS . . . WITH EVERYTHING!!!! You can make story maps in different ways. Probably the most common way is to draw the story ‘journey’ as a pictorial map. Pie Corbett is the master of story mapping and lots of schools adopt his method. Below you can see him in action. Note how he uses actions as well as the map to help children learn and re-tell the story, Awesome Man can shoot positronic rays out of his eyeballs, fly as straight as an arrow and hug mutant Jelly! Even villains like Professor Von Evil and the flaming Eyeballs are no match for this caped crusader.
