About this deal

I read A Certain Justice as a 2023 new read, continuing on from my 2022 binge re-read of the early P.

The cab-driver deposited her at Number 397 and watched her enter through the side gate at about ten-forty-five. She knew him well enough to be sure that what he had most hated was the knowledge that he had to sit while others spoke, others argued their case. Women who are struggling on a low income don't pay for an eye test unnecessarily or see their spectacles as a fashion accessory. At a moment when the Chinese statist paradigm can no longer be dismissed as an inadequate copy of Western rule of law, this timely study opens up a critical space for reappraisal. The recipient of many prizes and honors, she was created Baroness James of Holland Park in 1991 and was inducted into the International Crime Writing Hall of Fame in 2008.

A clever and successful barrister is found dead in her chambers, stabbed at the heart, and Dalgleish and his team are drawn into a complicated web of retribution, vengeance, rivalry, and envy. Guiding the reader on a colorful journey from spy thrillers and tales of hypocrisy through contemporary court dramas, Lee reveals a vibrant legal imagination that is hierarchical rather than horizontal, encompassing both the ‘high justice’ of the state and the ‘low justice’ of society at large. I was prepared to give this book three stars for its readable style and expansiveness until I came to a couple of paragraphs near the end in which James informs the reader of a parallel between one of the police detectives and one of the murderers.

Although A Certain Justice begins with news of a murder, the victim isn't set to die for another four weeks.and word processors rather than computers - a later mention of Dalgleish actually using a mobile feels jarringly modern given the low-tech nature of the world - no internet here! The cross-examination of Stephen Wright, landlord of the Duke of Clarence, on the third day of the trial had presented Venetia with little difficulty and she had expected none. A trailer for Season 2 can be seen here and an alternative trailer (with some different scenes) can be seen here. As was the case with the introduction of a Jewish detective in the last book, this time we open with Kate and new-boy Piers on a shooting range, so we know immediately how the book will end.
