Depending on which controller is fitted to your vehicle, a flashing glow plug lamp indicates an open circuit plug. On your car it can be serious in that the turbo is usually made by KKK and if they over speed (as they easily can during over boost) the compressor wheel can disintegrate and throw oil and shrapnel through the charge air system.

Since Friday i haven't seen the "Prnds of death" I've been proper paranoid and can't stop glancing at the dash waiting for something bad to happen. The only fix for this is to replace the entire gear selector unit - as its all sealed together and difficult to get into. My mechanic said as it hasn't been playing up and it's happened on 2 occasions, just live with it until it gets worse but since leaving there it's got progressively worse and worse showing new symptoms. The bit around the gear stick with the leather on and the plastic bit with the gears on that lights up.I also pulled the plug off and bridged the two terminals to see if it stopped the flashing - it didn't. Think I'll be getting only another couple of years out of the car before I trade it in for something else.

tdi, there must be a coolant sensor on my car as GP light doesnt come on when engine is hot, any ideas were it might be located. The only way to confirm the real issue is to have a diagnostic check done (where the car is connected to a computer and the fault codes logged by the car's computer are read). Although again, I'm guessing being a mk8, the car is only 6 or so months old, so that seems a bit odd, especially with both keys flashing.As the sending unit sends resistance to the gauge from zero to infinity (ok not infinite) the wire heats or cools bending the metal spring that the needle is attached to. Those who have encountered this issue are being encouraged to come forward and report their experience on the forums. However, the only time I have heard of a flashing glowplug light, WITHOUT an engine light and with no faults; it was an EGR valve problem. When the glow plug light is flashing it is indicating that there is a fault with the engine management system.
