It's hard to pick out any individual notes - very well blended - but if you smell close you can pick out a tang of ylang ylang and a soft haze of incense in the background. Today I am wearing L'eau Rose, by Balenciaga and it's giving me a similar vibe as what I remember Halston giving me.

Considering by most reviews Halston is appreciated mostly by ladies who remember it from their youth or got accustomed to wearing it, or at least have sweet memories of their childhood and their mothers or aunts wearing it. After the opening, on paper, I get a warm and creamy rush of amber and floral, almost like caramel or chocolate, but on my skin it turns mostly marigold. It is not the original I wore and I’m sad that it is no longer made, but this version is stunning and quite perfect on its own. I'd say alcohol free version smells more like body oil or balm, it's more powdery, just like a reminiscence of "normal" version, which is deep, dark, dense green chypre with impressive sillage and longevity. A woman who lived on the same floor as me in my freshman dorm wore this as her signature fragrance and it smelled amazing on her.I see the Azuree reference and would even go to a Cabochard reference, which may well be a leather note. In reality the perfumer was a man—legendary French nose Bernard Chant, who also created Aramis, Clinique’s Aromatics Elixir, and Estée Lauder’s Cinnabar—though Halston did devote himself to sourcing precisely the most striking composition.

I have nostalgia attached to marigold because my parent's gardens were full of them: they always used to plant them to repel mosquitoes. And in a way, considering that Halston himself has become a symbol of the impermanence of success, celebrity, and even life, that’s exactly how it should be. Turning off the personalised advertising setting won’t stop you from seeing Etsy ads, but it may make the ads you see less relevant or more repetitive. Even though Halston is very woody, it is not warm cuddly, by-the-fireplace woods at all, at least not in my memory. That sums up the Halston Classic perfume for me: it soothes those who feel out of place with an innocent, fresh opening, an earthy floral core, and a piquant but warm and creamy drydown. I purchased many bottles of this fragrance in the '80s, but I waited to wear it once it was not worn by so many women.Floral-chypres, such as this one, pair more austere woody-mossyness with the sweetness of a bouquet, making them much more approachable than pure chypres. Crisp green leaves, resinous marigold, and bright carnation are layered over the deep and earthy oakmoss.
