About this deal

I think the way it flowed and the author's portrayal of an imperfect, high school love is what made it worth reading. The panels are quite haphazard and it definitely isn't a manga for the type of reader who doesn't think, not because of its deep subject matter (it's quite simple, really) but because of the abstract way it is constructed. It is a slice of life told mainly from either of their viewpoints, with a one time dip into the mental processes of Hara, their music teacher.

I really missed more of the peaceful and cute scenes that would allow us to really get to know the characters, story and setting better. The way their relationship clashed at times and also flourished was extremely fascinating to witness. But opposites attract and before they know it, they've embarked on a journey neither one can quite define but which anyone with eyes can see is "Love. Yet, despite this, if you’re looking for a sweet, non-sexualized story about boys falling in love, I would recommend watching Doukyuusei . Doukyuusei can be read as a stand-alone, but to fully appreciate this story you should read Sotsugyousei and O. Better yet, both boys are allowed to explore and show their emotions in a safe space where neither of them are judged for, say, crying. To add insult to injury, the relationship that is deemed most worthy of that kind of background is the one where Sajou has been preyed upon by a child predator.

BUT: The mangakas herself stated it was her first BL, so she didn't mind if she used overused and cliche plots. While not necessarily detailed, there is a certain artistry to the wispy, pencil-like strokes that make up the drawings of her characters. Time leaps are pretty poorly written, and, overall, piecing out how events take place is more a matter of figuring it out from characters' conversations than actually seeing them happen. While there's nothing like actually holding a book in your hands, there's also no denying that the cost of those books can add up quickly. The main characters and their relationship didn't get the time to properly develop or even be properly introduced.

First, I have to say that one of the tropes I’m eternally grateful creator Asumiko Nakamura didn’t abide by was the power structure of the seme/uke relationship, in which the seme is the more dominant, masculine one (and often just straight up sexually assaults his partner), and the uke is the more feminine, submissive one who cries a whole bunch and blushes. However, this manga is full of cliches, yet it's drawn in such a way that it's captivating; it's pure and innocent, which I simply love about it. There isn’t an overarching plot, as the story unfolds, with each chapter presenting a new situation for the characters to have to come to terms with.

As Doukyuusei takes place in Tokyo, I’m going to assume that they’re one of the cities with these laws in practice. The lines of the poem from the classic class and the Budding Leaves song not only matched the atmosphere but it denotes the main events as well.I never thought that cliché was bad if it was well made, and this story is like that, it was so simple and at the same time for the smallest yet sweetest parts my heart throbbed, really lol. His immediate thought is that Rihito thinks he’s too cool for singing nerdy school songs (given his “cool glasses character” looks), but discovers when going to pick up something he forgot in the classroom that Rihito simply can’t read music and didn’t want to embarrass himself. And while I don’t partake as often as I used to, don’t be surprised to find me poking around an anime or manga every once in a while either.
