About this deal

Also, I really liked the way the two parts of the story were being told separately and at different speeds. When her life falls apart Fiona flees to New York and achieves eventual success as the head of a thriving business. It won the 2003 Carnegie Medal, and was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time in 2015. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Each day she learns a new word and with Weaver, her friend, she plays a wonderfully simple game in which they do battle firing associated words back and forth.Mattie is a beautifully-realised and highly engaging character, and Jennifer Donnelly has created an absorbing story, part mystery/part coming-of-age novel, which will hold the reader's attention to the last.

Every individual Mattie comes into contact with is a real person, and it makes the novel so much more meaningful. Mattie states that she is good at telling herself lies, and other characters comment she often seems oblivious to the events going on around her.

Grace is another young lady whose body is found lifeless in the lake by the Glenmore Hotel, where Mattie works. As things are going, Mattie is going to choose sex over literature and blow her university scholarship, whereas the teacher/poet has left her man for her unsorted stacks of books. Also, hilariously, in my newly obtained copy, I noticed that someone highlighted all of the references to food. Adele Geras, Guardian 'Part history, part compelling murder mystery, Jennifer Donnelly's A GATHERING LIGHT brings the past to powerful and vivid life.

Both books won the annual British Carnegie Medal, which opened before 2003 to American authors who co-publish in the U. The thin cardboard envelope the book was posted in had ripped and Royal Mail had to put it in one of their plastic envelopes. If Donnelly lets her readers off the hook with this one – if Royal Doulton, or whatever his name is, fails to jam one in or even to try – I’ll be disappointed. This addition is particularly exciting because I was joined by my Goodreads friend, Nut Meg, so keep an eye out for her review, soon! It has a totally different voice, but was a very engaging read in its own way - although a little emo ;) .A Northern Light is one of those books you come across every few years; the type of novel that buries itself in your heart from the first page and simply lingers in your thoughts for days, weeks, and even months afterward.
