If you don’t want to use the light, either as a nightlight or colourful statement lamp, it can be switched off separately to the fan, so the fan function remains running.

Finally, floor fans, which tend to be larger and so can cool a larger room - you might find them in gyms or conference centres. It's best to refer to the individual fan's user instructions but in general, you can remove dust and debris from a tower fan's blades using a can of compressed air. Most of the fans we recommend are three to ten times more powerful than that on their highest settings. If it came with a sleep mode to quiet the fan, shut off the lights, and a timer to shut off the fan, this boosted its rating. In fact, the only reason it’s not at the top of this list is that it’s less powerful than the Dyson and takes a certain amount of assembly – although I dealt with that in less than five minutes. Ease of Use: I examined how easy the manual controls were to use and whether they had a touchscreen or remote control to make them less hassle to use. It's so quiet in comparison to other tower fans we've used, ideal for using as you sleep on ridiculously hot days (we're British so anything above 20 is boiling). The electriQ AM07B bladeless fan is the perfect companion to keep you cool on those hot days and warm nights.

The bladeless Air Multiplier concept has undergone a bit of a redesign, with a slightly slower motor that makes less noise and a ‘Helmholtz cavity’ (good old Helmholtz, eh) to dampen the sound even further. It’s got a lot of features for the money, and those who want the appearance of a Dyson without having the spend hundreds will find it appealing too. Sarah’s role as chief editor at DIY Garden is about more than just making sure we’re literally dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s (although she’s a stickler for detail, so it’s certainly about that too!On average though, a tower fan uses very little energy to run and will cost around 40p a day if it's on for 20 hours.
