About this deal

It’s little over a year since Cara Hunter – and, indeed, DI Adam Fawley – appeared on the scene with her debut novel Close to Home. With three books in little over a year, Cara Hunter could be in danger of her readership burning out with Fawley fatigue. In my opinion this book is the weakest of the three I have read although it was still a captivating read.

But it's not long before the body of the mother Samantha is found amongst the debris which leaves the lingering questions 'Where is the father Michael? The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Her characters are well-developed, and it’s excellent to be able to follow them as they deal with each new case and the challenges it brings. Anyway, now I’ve established that I’m a huge Hunter advocate, No Way Out deserves its own special mention. The father of the family involved in the fire, Michael Esmond, is an academic, but that's as close as it gets. Various shots of the fire damage inside: the dining room, the stairs, some of the bedrooms, what remains of the furniture - most of it hefty and old-fashioned.

The team dynamics have shifted since In the Dark – Quinn has been demoted, and Gislingham temporarily promoted in his place, which causes some tension between the two men, and puts a lot of pressure on Gislingham to prove himself both to his teammates and to his boss, Fawley. In a narrative that goes back and forth in time, we become intimately acquainted with the Esmond family that includes Michael's carefree brother, Philip, who spends time sailing round the world, Michael's university colleagues, Samantha's severe post-natal depression, their employment of Harry who tends to their garden. The one thing I wish, though, is that there was a US release date for this book and the next in the series. Detective Inspector Adam Fawley and his team, certain that the fire was set deliberately, start to dig into the family’s background and discover that money problems may well be at the root of the problem: the house has been in the father’s family for generations, but his grandfather’s cast-iron will ensures that he can never sell it.I have a boy cat who does his best to distract me whenever I get close to a keyboard (if you have cats, you'll know), I love travelling, spending time with friends, and I have never knowingly turned down a glass of champagne.

I found it a more effective impact to create the impression that major and essential information was driven from a news source or police report. Everything wasn’t perfect in the Esmond household, and the reader discovers this through flashbacks. His wife has left him – something he attempts to keep from the team – while whispers at the station put him and Somer in an intense – if ill-advised – relationship. Were their bodies in what remained of the house and which was being steadily cleared, or had they left the children at home alone? It's a device which can go wrong - and normally I don't like it - but it works well here and allows a lot of red herrings to grow to full size. With the reader taken behind the scenes, No Way Out is an utterly riveting and authentic look at solving a major incident that carries the reader along with its short bursts of every piece of incoming information making for an invigorating read. I have really enjoyed reading this series, great characters that are continually developing and good fast paced plots.
