About this deal

FD3 does not isolate very much from the outside noise, having an open design, and a passive noise isolation between 10 and 15 dB of passive noise isolation. We have very low leakage though, and I was unable to annoy my girlfriend with loud death metal, even though she was just 2 meters away from me, and I was listening at a deafening 110dB level. Leaving tuning aside, the FD3 sounds definitely upgraded since articulation is of finer quality, resolves better, it is more dynamic, fuller, more natural and has the upper hand on the soundstage. The monitor sports a protruding part with the MMCX (Micro Miniature Coaxial) female connectors on the top and the unique semi-open acoustic opening at the bottom. Both on the top and the bottom are left and right color indicators, from which the blue one is on the left and red on the right side of the monitor. The faceplate of the monitor shell is one for sure one of the eye-catching highlights that the FiiO FD3 offers to the consumers. The faceplate design is based according to FiiO advertisings on the theme of “Curves”. It is made of a unique celluloid panel that has been covered with a special 2.5D film coating glass, which shows the FiiO brand logo on the top. The FiiO FD3 offers a pretty ergonomic cylinder shaped monitor design, which makes it ideal for the use for longer listening periods without to hurt my ears that has an ear concha with an average size.

That design quirk made me so happy; I wish all headphone makers would use this from now on. Save a little stress when we place the cable connectors on the wrong shell and must reverse them.

Design

With the shorter stems and lips on the FD3, the ear tips that come with the FD3 are all comfortable. However, care must be taken for the IEMs to fit inside your ears properly, so pushing on the circular part to get the right fit for the IEM is a must to get the best sound out of them. Spacing between the images is also properly depicted and does not sound smeared with complex musical passages. Although there is a sense of layering within the soundstage, which allows images to be formed at different depths of the soundstage, the images formed are still flat. So a 3d image within the soundstage is a bit difficult to form. Sadly, no “ultra-fine copper-clad aluminum Japanese Daikoku voice coil” here but for the price, it’s hard to complain.

The FD3/FD3 Pro has a simple, yet beautiful appearance based on the theme of curves. The unique celluloid panel is covered with Z5D film coating glass for a pure yet fresh transparent look And the aluminium- magnesium alloy of the body makes the FD3/FD3 Pro exceptionally light, making it easier and more pleasurable to carry around. The aluminium-magnesium alloy main body is made man industrial process combining five-axis CNC processing and hand polishing. An interior 3-layered chamber is set up and designed to push a copious amount of air, which will lead to more bass depth and impact. The imaging & sound separation sounds quite average, nothing out of the ordinary. I wasn’t sure if to include this point in the hits or misses section, but considering the price of the IEM I had to list it in the misses. C-shaped acoustic flutes, like these, tend to produce a more pronounced and forced physical texture to the treble and bass snap. The FiiO FD3 is a pretty successful In-Ear Monitor for its price that offers a pretty airy and spacious soundstage presentation that is suitable for a fairly precise placement of instruments and vocals thanks to its semi-open design. The soundstage is pretty wide for an IEM at this price range, while the depth and height is on an average level. Upstream, FiiO also employs second-generation asymmetric internal and external magnetic circuit systems. This design has been optimized to generate a stronger magnetic field compared to a typical magnetic circuit system, resulting in a higher magnetic field density for a “more robust sound.” To push things further, the FiiO FD11 is equipped with N52 neodymium magnets, rated at 111dB/mW@1kHz, ensuring powerful sound reproduction even with low-powered sources. The cable is made of 4 strands of high purity monocrystalline copper which makes it a total of 120 strands of wire inside the cables.

Bass became tight and controlled, fast, full, with excellent dynamic range, good levels of clarity and layering while mid-bass bloat was reduced and it didn't mask nor cloud the rest of the frequencies too much. It’s a very cool-looking IEM, thanks to the diamond-cut faceplate and I still use them at this very moment. Here is an excerpt of my review: natural sound, but it also effectively protects your hearing by balancing air pressure within the FD3 Pro leading to less pressure on your eardrums. This makes your listening experience

Disclaimer: The Fiio FD3 is own my personal unit, while I borrowed my friend’s FD3 Pro for comparison purpose in this review. All thoughts & opinions shared here will be my own, 100% honest and bias-free. This review of course is completely subjective. The FiiO FD3 has a very robust monitor shell that is made of aluminum-magnesium alloy material, which has been processed with the latest five-axis CNC process that was finally hand polished. Each of the monitors weights about 7 grams that increases the premium feel of the monitors. Source: Harish Jonnalagadda / Android Central (Image credit: Source: Harish Jonnalagadda / Android Central) If you are tired of too lean, cold, clinical or thin sounding IEM, the lush and energic bassy tonality of the FD3 will surely charm you with it’s musical immediacy that is everything but boring, yet cohesive in it’s balance. As well, if you need even brigther presentation, the extra tuning filter will deliver you this extra treble bite.It should be noted that I have absolutely no affiliation with FiiO. I am not receiving any incentive for this review or to sweeten things out. I'd like to thank FiiO for providing the sample for this review. Every opinion expressed is mine and I stand by it. The purpose of this review is to help those interested in FiiO FD3 Earphones find their next music companion. Each of the FD3 cable's numerous features has been carefully designed to truly enhance your experience. The cable adopts an expanded MMCX connector for easier cable changes; the curved audio plug design makes it easier to plug into; and 4 strands of high-purity monocrystalline copper wires for a total of 120 wires make your music and vocals simply vivid. Once again, FiiO achieves great lengths and delivers exactly what they promised: a flagship dynamic driver IEM for a relatively low price. The new volcanic system works as intended, giving you a nice, relaxed, sound signature that should suit any genre and any source.
