Recently, I was bused to Green Haven Correctional Facility, where I was temporarily housed for a court proceeding. I convinced a judge to issue a subpoena, which revealed that a witness who testified against me had been secretly detained until he cooperated with authorities. This was denied at trial and in previous motions. The matter is now playing out in court. ‘We won!’ Through our legal empowerment programs we support and learn from our community partners as they build power, dignity, and knowledge to actively challenge inequities impacting their communities. We organize trainings on legal empowerment, co-create legal education and empowerment resources, co-produce participatory action research on the power of community justice, and hold convenings to highlight the success and promise of legal empowerment. Martha Foster, the main character in the first novel, The Jailhouse Lawyer, was immediately relatable to me. I really cared about what happened to her, as well as her young son. The novel was full of completely corrupt characters, and their actions helped to keep me riveted to the book. Well before the novel was over, I already felt like I'd been through the wringer. I went through the story in one sitting, and while I loved the main character, this character driven reader couldn't put the book down due to the fast paced, stress inducing plot!
