About this deal

For a basic magnetic surface thermometer at a low price, the Galafire is the thermometer for you. This works as a primary or even as a secondary thermometer on the surface of the stove or chimney. Just place the magnetic thermometer of the surface and view the result. Again the display is purely analog and will read +/- 20 degrees accuracy. The delay in reading is also one to two minutes as the heat must be transferred through the metal surface of the flue pipe or the stove surface. Infrared temperature sensors work quite differently again, but these tend to be used in more specialist devices and settings. They are not typically found in standard, low-cost temperature gauges for traditional air or fluid heat measurement. What are the Symptoms of a Bad Thermostat or Temperature Sensor? A wood stove thermometer is therefore a great piece of kit that you can use to help understand how well you’re using your stove for each fire. Types Of Wood Stove Thermometer

With a change in the wind speed, the temperature variation could be 10 to 20 degrees in just a few minutes. This change can be detected by the minute changes noticed on a digital display allowing an owner to close the airflow and reduce the chance of a chimney fire or just a waste of wood burnt up as wasted heat up the chimney. A stove thermometer should therefore be used as one piece of the puzzle to helping you to understand how well and efficiently you’re operating a wood stove. If the temperature of a stove is indicated to be higher than optimal on a wood stove thermometer then the fire can be burning too fast to be efficient with much of the heat being lost up the flue.

Wood stove thermometers should always be used in their designated placement, which we discuss below. Wood Stove Thermometer Placement Under normal operation a stove will vary 15 to 20 degrees F. over an hour under normal conditions. Over the course of a typical winter day a stove may vary 100 to 150 degrees F. throughout an 8 hour day after stoking and burning down. With this normal heat up and cool down a simple analog dial thermometer will keep a stove owner informed as needed. Understanding exactly how a temperature sensor works would require knowledge of thermodynamic law. Still, it is important to be aware that different types of thermometers and heat sensors work in different ways. The key to both is the ideal of a bimetal thermometer.

You can buy indoor office and commercial room temperature gauges and outdoor air temperature gauges in a huge variety of designs and styles. They can be as small and unobtrusive as a magnetic thermometer for wood stoves, while a heavy-duty industrial temperature gauge, HVAC or expansion temperature gauge will often be much larger and more robust. We place our stove top thermometer on the edge of the top surface of our multi fuel stove so that we can keep an eye on the temperatures. Whatever the reason, if the temperature is too low in the firebox, the stove needs wood and this will alert you to the need for more wood on the fire, and more heat in the stove. CONSISTENT TEMPERATUREI did want to spend some time on the benefits of having and using a GOOD stove thermometer. WHY A DIGITAL THERMOMETER IS CRITICAL As a result, wood stoves can take different amounts of wood and the controls may affect the burning performance in different ways. If you do not mind a stainless and glass device permanently mounted on your stove or chimney, this may be the thermometer you are looking for. You will have to drill a hole in the surface of your stove or chimney, seal it up, and I would recommend stainless mounting screws to hold it in place (more holes to drill and tap). This unit is specifically designed to be inserted in a double wall chimney to provide the in flue temperature. A simple, round, open face thermometer that can be used to monitor the temperature of the inside of a flue. To get an accurate reading this can only be used on a double wall chimney pipe. These types of thermometers are calibrated to measure the temperature at the top surface of a wood stove and so won’t provide an accurate reading if placed on a stovepipe.

Other products on Thermometers Direct that can help to detect the temperature of pipes and radiators are the Penetration Probe and the Pipe Clamp Probe. Both of these devices are reasonable and affordable. If you do not require a professional thermometer every now and then, these probes can help you out for daily determination of pipe and radiator temperatures. The Pipe Clamp probe has a range of -50°C to +100°C while the Penetration Probe has a capacity of over and above 250 degrees Celsius. Dial thermometer gauges are often found in industrial and commercial settings. They are also common in certain everyday domestic settings and appliances. Keeping your stove at a consistent temperature is also a more efficient method for heating a home. As the temperature of the stove increases, the home temperature increases with it. To reduce the home temperature the stove temperature needs to be reduced below the normal or average burning temperature to allow the home temperature to cool or reduce. Allow slightly more air into the stove using the vent(s), ensuring that you’re not allowing too much air in, and temperatures go above optimum. The Bi-metal pipe thermometer takes some time in detecting the temperature of pipes and radiators. The spring provided is ideal for small pipes and in case of larger pipes you can use a tie-wrap, a larger spring or a wire. These thermometers need recalibration and it is quite easy to do so with these kinds of pipe and radiator thermometers. If, however, you need better, swift readings, we suggest you buy the infrared thermometers which have a greater accuracy and exactness in the readings they provide.

Special features of the strap-on temperature sensor

If you have a stovepipe thermometer it will need to be placed somewhere on the stovepipe that’s protruding out the top of your wood stove.

Some models of thermometer, especially the lower cost ones, may not have been calibrated as accurately as the more expensive units from reputable manufacturers and may give a false indication of temperature and efficiency of fires. You will almost always see at least one type of temperature gauge in car dashboards, for monitoring engine coolant temperature. Medical facilities have access to various sorts of body temperature gauge. A water temperature gauge for use on pipes and ducting (including flow and return thermometers) can be found in a professional plumbing toolkit. Dirt or moisture ingress can also cause problems for certain thermometer types. However, most models designed for outdoor use will be IP rated against this. Analogue dial temperature gauges work on a similar principle. However, instead of the heat change generating an electrical signal, it physically alters the positions and properties of small metal components in the instrument sensor. The dial needle is tuned to display these changes as a number value. Each model of wood stove is designed, built, and operated differently, and they can come in a range of sizes and heat output depending on your needs.

The Pipe Radiator Thermometer, as the name suggests, is used for determining the temperature of the said surfaces. This thermometer can be kept on the pipes to regulate their temperature. There are various needs for which this thermometer can be used. It can be used to detect minute changes in the temperature of pipes and radiators, and can even be used to keep the temperature constant through constantly updating the operator. The temperature range of the Pipe Radiator Thermometer is from zero to 120 degrees Celsius. To make sure that the pipes are giving the perfect temperature for your home or office, the Pipe Radiator Thermometer is best suited to your needs. Having access to an instant and accurate temperature on a wood stove may not appear to be an important piece of information. Here is why it is! TOO HOT A wood stove thermometer should be used as a guide to understand how well a fire inside the stove is burning. A fire should be burning at temperatures indicated to be within the most optimum temperature range shown on the thermometer. High-quality dial thermometers and temperature gauges are manufactured by many leading brands. You will find a diverse variety of models and configurations available online. Some models may also combine other types of digital reader - such as a hygrometer (for humidity), ammeter, auto meter, pyrometer or tachometer - into a single unit. Slowly close down the air vents to allow less air into the stove, without closing the vents too far and causing the fire to struggle.
