About this deal

VIZhyal 0.1% is a sterile, ophthalmic solution that soothes and moisturizes the ocular surface to alleviate symptoms associated with moderate dry eyes, such as burning, irritation and foreign body sensation. VIZhyal 0.1% acts as a humectant on the eye, providing relief of dry eye conditions, including those associated with the use of PC, infrequent blinking, medical treatments, atmospheric pollution, air conditioning, central heating, wind and sun.

Limited clinical data in pediatric patients with administration of dorzolamide (preserved formulation) three times a day are available. (For information regarding pediatric dosing see section 5.1). The patient should close the eye and press the inner corner of the eye with a finger for about two minutes. This helps to stop the medicine from getting into the rest of the body. Carmellose (CMC) is a polysaccharide, a biological polymer, known as mucilage. It increases the residence of tears on the eye surface, as well as increasing the viscosity of the tear film. The properties of carmellose protects the eye against irritation, and moisturizes the ocular surface, thus relieving the sensation of discomfort caused by dry eye by creating a protective, viscoelastic shield. When used for the first time, before delivering a drop to the eye, the patient should practise using the dropper bottle by squeezing it slowly to deliver one drop into the air, away from the eye.The following side effects have been reported with dorzolamide preservative free either during clinical trials or during post-marketing experience:

Sodium Hyaluronate is a viscous polymer used for its moisturising and lubricating effects. Sodium Hyaluronate provides a protective, viscoelastic film across the ocular mucosa; which acts as an active barrier against external agents, and which helps to counteract symptoms of dry eye. Composition: 0.5% carmellose sodium (carboxymethyl cellulose), boric acid, sodium tetraborate decahydrate, sodium chloride, water for injection.

There is a potential for an additive effect on the known systemic effects of carbonic anhydrase inhibition in patients receiving an oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and dorzolamide. The concomitant administration of dorzolamide and oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors is not recommended. Instructions 2. – 4. should be repeated for delivery into the other eye, if required. The patient should be clearly instructed if one eye only requires treatment, and if so, which eye is affected. Suitable for treatment of mild, moderate and severe dry eyes, providing long-lasting relief from eye discomfort and dryness; including post-surgery treatment Dorzolamide contains a sulphonamido group, which also occurs in sulphonamides and although administered topically, is absorbed systemically. Therefore the same types of adverse reactions that are attributable to sulphonamides may occur with topical administration, including severe reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. If signs of serious reactions or hypersensitivity occur, discontinue the use of this preparation.

For patients who are allergic to lanolin, alternative lanolin-free eye ointment can be obtained from specialist. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme found in many tissues of the body including the eye. In humans, carbonic anhydrase exists as a number of isoenzymes, the most active being carbonic anhydrase II (CA-II) found primarily in red blood cells (RBCs) but also in other tissues. Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase in the ciliary processes of the eye decreases aqueous humour secretion. The result is a reduction in intra-ocular pressure (IOP).

If you develop allergic reactions including hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat which may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing, you should stop using this medicine and seek immediate medical advice. Dorzolamide has not been studied in patients with hepatic impairment and should therefore be used with caution in such patients.

Overall, this study did not reveal additional safety concerns in paediatric patients: approximately 26% (20% in dorzolamide monotherapy) of paediatric patients were observed to experience drug related adverse effects, the majority of which were local, non serious ocular effects such as ocular burning and stinging, injection and eye pain. A small percentage <4%, was observed to have corneal oedema or haze. Local reactions appeared similar in frequency to comparator. In post marketing data, metabolic acidosis in the very young particularly with renal immaturity/impairment has been reported. Preparations, substances and products for the eyes; eye lotions, eye moisturisers, cosmetic preparations for the eyes. After you have used all doses there will be some Vizidor left in the bottle. You should not be concerned since an extra amount of Vizidor has been added and you will get the full amount of Vizidor that your doctor has prescribed. Do not attempt to use the excess medicine remaining in the bottle after you have completed the course of treatment. Try to minimise environmental factors by taking regular breaks from working on VDUs and increasing humidity of rooms where possible. Review medications that may aggravate dry eyes e.g. antihistamines. Ask about OTC medication. Treat underlying condition. Blepharitis is the most common Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) producing dry eye symptoms. Dry eye is one of the self-care conditions for which eye drops are available OTC and should not be routinely prescribed in primary care. ( Leeds CCG Guidance). Treatment should include applying warmth using ‘eye bags’ (available over the counter) and eyelid hygiene. Patient self help guide. There is some evidence that a diet rich in omega-3 fats may improve symptoms. Patients with symptoms suggestive of Sjogren's syndrome should be referred for ophthalmologist review.Systane Balance (propylene glycol 0.6%) or Optive Plus (carboxymethylcellulose 0.5%, glycerine 1%, castor oil). 10ml, 6m expiry, contains preservative. Unlike oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, topical administration of dorzolamide hydrochloride allows for the active substance to exert its effects directly in the eye at substantially lower doses and therefore with less systemic exposure. In clinical trials with dorzolamide, this resulted in a reduction in IOP without the acid-base disturbances or alterations in electrolytes characteristic of oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Prescribing VIZhyal (sodium hyaluronate) eye drops by brand could cut up to 40% from local prescribing costs and deliver long term price stability without compromising patient care.
