About this deal

Brother's tapes (up to 12mm) can be used with this P-touch model and are available in up to 60 colour and size combinations. Alternatively, you can pay a little extra for a thermal printing label maker, a machine that doesn’t require additional tape, and could save you money in the long run. Bluetooth is also supported by many label printers, as is Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi Direct. Ethernet and Wi-Fi, of course, make the printer available on your network, so any computer or mobile devices on the network can send it a print job—assuming the proper software is installed. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct create peer-to-peer connections between the printer and a mobile device or PC.

To help you find the right option, we tested 13 label makers in a home setting. To get started, we inspected the design, printed tags, and explored the various functions. Then, we evaluated each maker on instructions, assembly, functionality, portability, and overall value. If you've got grand plans to declutter your home and streamline your storage system in the months ahead, a labelling machine is an essential bit of kit. Please be aware that if additional set up is required by our design studio this may delay turnaround time.Rechargeable batteries are typically the most convenient and sustainable power source for your label maker—particularly portable ones. Rather than separately purchasing and replacing the batteries, you can recharge your label maker as needed. While overall we prefer rechargeable models, battery-powered label makers like the Brother P-Touch Easy Handheld Label Maker are compact and portable, giving you the flexibility to label without wondering where the nearest outlet is for recharging. The obvious advantage of these label makers is that they don't need to be physically tethered to a device to work - and are super-portable. Different label printers support different tapes and rolls, as well as various width ranges and materials. Other label makers use embossing to make their mark, meaning you’ll need to buy a supply of tape and ribbon for this to work – although the vintage effect offered by such models is incredibly appealing. The parts that you do not require metallic we have to create a white base layer on the artwork, this is achieved by creating a separate layer on your artwork, named “white” and anywhere our press finds this colour it will print white toner beneath the CMYK artwork.

It includes the Phomemo D30 label maker, a thermal label maker that you can connect to your phone via bluetooth. This Cricut is compact, easily transportable and its sleek design means it even looks great on an office counter or worktop. The best part is that it can print up to three lines and comes with over 30 preloaded fonts and 1,600 symbols. The Bluetooth-compatible app is also capable of batch printing, making this a great choice for small businesses as well. The Brother P-touch Cube Plus is misnamed—it's more of a cube minus, shaped like half a cube at 5 by 2.6 by 5 inches (HWD). But that doesn't stop it from being a solid choice. A head-to-head competitor to Epson's LW-PX400, it offers many of the same key features, including an automatic cutter; a similar range of tape widths, from 3.5mm to 24mm (0.14 to 0.94 inch); and the ability to connect to Windows and macOS systems for printing on your desktop, or to Android and iOS devices for printing on the go. Extras for the Cube Plus include a rechargeable battery and faster speed than the LW-PX400. It's rated at 130% faster, and indeed came in faster on our testing, although the results were recorded using different generations of our test protocol, and so aren't fully comparable. Who It's ForSetup: First, assembly of each label maker was completed. We timed how long it took to take the product out of the box and prepare it for use, and recorded how useful and detailed the included instructions were. It offers similar features as its rival but comes with a QWERTY keyboard so it feels more like typing on a regular laptop or phone.

This is entirely up to your needs, but suffice to say that monochrome-colour printers are traditionally cheaper.

And then there's some options, like the Dymo LabelManager 280 (our best overall), that can work as a standalone gadget or when connected to a computer or phone. Our advice? Go with the device that has the features and functionality that are most important to you, regardless of its label (pun intended). Although when you're buying one of the embossing models, you’ll need to factor in extra for the tape and ribbon. These look great on homemade produce in glass jars or bottles. They’re easy to peel and have a quality adhesive that is also water resistant.

Navigating the app entails a little bit of a learning curve, but is relatively easy after you read the directions and spend some time playing around with it. The biggest difference? The latest version offers Bluetooth capabilities, along with a USB cable that gives you the option to print from a computer or mobile device like your phone. It still has a full QWERTY keyboard for on-the-spot printing, too, as well as a full-color screen and full QWERTY keyboard, plus an impressive selection of fonts and customizable lettering options. One of our favorite features from testing the Brother PTD600 was the ability to power it with an adapter or wirelessly with batteries, and we're happy to report that this is also available in the newer model. Portability: While using it, we also took note of its portability: how heavy the label maker is and how much space it actually takes up.
