About this deal

Now, my personal favorite compound for cleaning and polishing bakelite (and other similar phenolics) is to use Cuticle Oil. Another great benefit of metal polishing is that it can make cleaning easier. When metals are polished, they tend to repel dirt, dust, and other contaminants. This can make it much easier to keep metals clean over time. If you have any components on your vehicle finished in chrome, you’ll want to regularly maintain them to ensure they stay shiny for years to come. Like everything else on your car, proper maintenance contributes to resale value, and who doesn’t appreciate a car that looks brand new even years after it’s left the dealership lot?

Paste polishes are best to be used at cleaning home items and are much cheaper than liquid polishes. Powder polishes Abrasive compounds are one of the most popular types of metal polishes. They typically contain abrasive particles that help to remove dirt, grime, and tarnish from metal surfaces. Abrasive compounds can be used on a variety of different metals, including aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, stainless steel, and even silver. However, they should be used with caution on softer metals , as they can cause scratching. Customers should be aware that although it’s only one product and coat, it will need to be removed with a clean cloth after (otherwise the finish will remain hazy rather than shiny). One customer was thrilled that it “only took a tiny drop and little to no elbow grease” to completely wipe away “all the rust spots from the salt water on our chrome.”A few caveats from my own experience, in case they help anyone. These are nothing more than my own opinions and observations, but maybe they'll help answer a few questions for those who are new to using these compounds. I highly encourage you to try these for yourself and form your own opinions but, like Mom says, "Not on the good silverware!"

One of the most common benefits of metal polishing is that it can restore the shine to dull or tarnished metals. Metal polishes can also be used to remove rust from metal surfaces. In some cases, metal polishes can also be used to repair minor damage, such as scratches or dents. [5], [6], [7], [8] Makes Cleaning EasierYou’ll also want to think about size and quantity. How much metal are you trying to polish? Do you need a large amount of metal polish or will a small bottle do? [5], [6], [7] Eco-Friendliness You’ll also want to consider how long you need the protection to last. Some polishes offer short-term protection, while others can last up to 12 months. If you’re looking for a polish that will give your metal surfaces long-lasting protection, be sure to choose one that is specifically designed for that purpose . The Strength of the Polish I wasn’t a heavy user of Brasso before the formulation change, but the folks I talked to said it’s like night and day and sadly much less effective than the legacy product. That being said, for this test, I used the new Brasso so we can test its current version. Once you have finished polishing, you will want to remove the excess polish with a clean, dry cloth. You may also want to apply a coat of wax or sealant to the polished area to help protect it from dirt and grime. [6], [7], [8], [9]

Simichrome also leaves a thin, invisible, protective film on the metal surface to protect against further tarnish. That’s not to say it seals the metal completely, but rather assists in delaying the oxidation of the surface. Brasso Chrome rims will go through far tougher conditions than other chrome components of your car. Therefore it’s important that they are thoroughly cleaned and protected. We strongly recommend that you remove all the dirt before polishing. Brake dust is often left behind after using a standard soap, so it’s also worth using a wheel cleaner for brake dust that’s safe on chrome wheels. I decided to put them head to head on a piece of vintage hardware around my shop, an old door escutcheon, to see how they do and what the difference is. After this post you should have a good sense of which one you may want because they do yield different results even if they proclaim to do essentially the same thing. Simichrome When polishing metal, it is important to remember that less is more. You should only apply enough polish to cover the surface of the metal and you should avoid applying too much pressure. If you apply too much pressure, you could end up scratching the metal. If you are not sure how much pressure to use, it is always best to start with less and then increase the amount of pressure if necessary.Powder polishes are typically applied with a cloth or brush. The abrasive particles in the polish will remove any oxides or tarnish from the metal surface. It is important to make sure that you only apply the polish to a small area at a time and that you do not over-polish the metal. Once fully cleaned and dried, you can apply the chrome polish to remove all the defects and increase the shine. Although many polishes have a protective coating, we recommend that you use a wheel wax afterwards for further protection.
