About this deal

As far as player count goes I think you could play it with a large group, but it works best with two or three players. Most of the action comes through an app so you have to pass the phone or device around. Only so many eyes can help look over the various clues and plot a course of action. Too many cooks and all that…

The box can hold this game and it’s currently available expansions (Welcome to Redview and Chronicles of Crime Noir). It is all neatly organized in the box, probably one of the best implementations I have seen to store a core game and it’s expansions in one place while keeping them separate. The app adds dimensions to the game. It allows characters to behave realistically and have their own lives within the world. On a mechanical level, it also makes Chronicles of Crime effortless to play. The scanning works perfectly, and next steps are clearly indicated. Zatu has an excellent range of games and for most of them the best prices too. Delivery is always fast and I have never received a game in bad condition. 10/10 would recommend. Each case usually has a deadline, meaning the in-game time by which you need to give a solution. Each piece of evidence found, each character interrogated, and each location travelled to add to the time spent, so you have to choose your actions with care. The tech works well and I had no problem with scanning unless under very bright lights. And while replay value of each case is low, there is a ton of content and due to the app it is easy to add further cases down the line. I love the app on my phone as a tool. The QR code scanning is such an innovative piece to the game, plus all the additional scenarios you can buy. Chronicles of Crime is super easy to set-up; you put out the various components, most of which have a QR code on them, turn on the app and start the tutorial. If you have splashed out on the VR module as well, you’ll need to keep that handy too. The VR module looks like a small set of glasses but clips on to a normal side phone nice and snugly.

The living element of realism in Chronicles of Crime 1400 is incredibly immersive. Missing something during an initial investigation can lead to you running around trying to find it, or spending too long talking to a character, can mean another wanders off. There’s always constant pressure to solve a case, and you’re not left to just spend time showing every item to every character. Chronicles of Crime or 1400 The premise sees you solving crimes across Paris, which is the exact premise of the former two as well, just with a changing timeline. Instead of an evidence hunting dog as you found in 1400, it’s a Cyber-raven, and instead of visions, you might have cybernetic implants. It’s possible that if you don’t like previous versions, you’re unlikely to like this one, because I didn’t find anything particularly new or refreshing to it – because it’s merely a change of setting and some new investigations to complete. However if you did, you’ll find this one to be perfectly engaging. Without including spoilers, there were a few aspects I really had to think to figure out, and I enjoyed the whole process – though arguably, this was an easier one to complete than 1900.At the start of a game, you choose in the app which case you want to play. During a short introduction, you will hear about an important character or two, and a location where you can start your investigation.

To go to a location in Chronicles of Crime you will scan it’s QR code and meet any people there. To interview them you simply scan them and then any evidence or characters you want to ask them about, the only limitation is you cannot directly ask them about locations. Evidence cards have general titles like ‘Books’ and ‘Medicine and Drugs’ which actually makes it work really well. Scanning footprints you have found when interviewing someone will reveal their shoe size for example. Great thriller with a twist at every episode! Just completed 6 episodes. Every episode ends with a question that begs to be answered, and it will be during the next episode. When you are talking to a person, you can ask them questions by scanning items or people, and they will tell you what they know on the topic. It’s all very intuitive and easy to use. The original Chronicles of Crime is set in modern-day, and features 6 scenarios, with more purchasable through the app. It also has 2 expansions, Noir, with its 1950’s LA setting, and Welcome to Redview with its 80’s teenagers. You can read our review of them all here. The game’s VR experience requires only a mobile phone: Players put the VR glasses provided onto their mobile device, then raise them in front of their eyes to immerse themselves in the game's universe and search for clues in a virtual world. Really like the Specialists component. Chronicles of crime gives you access to 4 resources to “call” by scanning them. This will allow you to ask for autopsy info, electronic forensics, physical evidence forensics and a criminal profiler. Chronicles of Crime: 1400 is a fun detective game with a range of different types of mysteries, interesting characters, and a cool setting. The use of the app enables more nuanced and specific investigations than is generally possible in storybook detective games.

You will also be told which Vision cards to draw and look at. These represent prophetic dreams your character has had and usually depict scenes connected to the case in some as yet unknown way. We also pass the phone around and take turns reading. There are fun events that can happen while reading the text on the phone that really scared our group (for example: A phone suddenly ringing). It's just written words and there is no sound effect but our reader freaked out and said "Oh my God the phone's ringing!" - which sent everyone into a panic. This is what happens when you get a really good set of friends together willing to immerse themselves into the story. That being said, the scenarios are well designed and sometimes challenging. There are a lot of clues to be uncovered and some missions will keep gamers hunting for hours. If you are looking for something new and unique in the investigative genre, Chronicles of Crime is worth a look.Their answers may reveal new information, lead you to new locations, or make you aware of new characters. In Chronicles of Crime 1400, players take on the role of Abelard Lavel, a knight with visionary powers in medieval Paris. Each mission starts with Abelard having a vision and players drawing specific vision cards to illustrate the dream. These cards aren’t used in the game but can give clues to help solve the crime.
