Beyond the need to build upon the foundation of its award-winning core design, the brand has arguably taken up the mantle of delivering innovative Chinese horology to the masses, which only adds to the pressure on its current slate of releases. With this in mind, any follow-up to the 2021 release of the CIGA Design Blue Planet is bound to garner intense enthusiast scrutiny. Rather than resting on its laurels, the brand takes the GPHG-winning base model and adds a new layer of visual drama and material quality. The new CIGA Design Blue Planet – Gilding Version combines an impressively luxe feel with the same unique display as its predecessor, delivering what may well be the Chinese marque’s most compelling offering to date.The crown is recessed into a cutaway in the case, and the underside of the crown hangs just below, giving you a spot to pop it out with a fingernail. The design of the crown is pretty unique as well. The watch only carries 30m of water resistance, and I’ve seen a number of criticisms about that. So no swimming with it - Though, I would question why anyone would to begin with. It’s not a dive watch, and certainly doesn’t pretend to be. That being said, I don’t find that criticism fair. The Dial: The titanium render portrays a much darker gunmetal finish, but in person it doesn’t look much different than a stainless steel watch. The only other difference between the two models is the 20 grams in weight. Design

I quite like this decentralized view of the planet, as the design may have come off as cheesy, were it a stereotypical framing of the Earth’s continents. If the product has no quality problems, the cost of returning the product such as freight, customs duties and other costs shall be borne by the consumer.The Chinese firm worked with Seagull to create a movement which differs from a typical three-hander by moving the inner minute-ring 390-degrees (rather than 360-degrees) every hour. This extra travel sets the inner minute-ring an extra 30-degrees forward, so that it can accurately tell the time vis-a-vis the stationary outer hour-ring. Meanwhile, the inner disc’s (or globe’s) compass-rose points to the time. The only other watches that work this way that I know of are the French Trilobe asymmetricals. A Unique Case (in titanium or steel) This kind of approach to creating something new, that nobody has ever done before is exactly the kind of fresh air I feel the industry needs. And since the Blue Planet is a GPHG winner, I’m apparently not alone in my thinking. I’m thrilled to see such innovation, and with the amount of attention to detail and ergonomics, the Blue Planet has, I really didn’t find any real fault. I never thought I’d be sitting here saying that this is one of the most fun and interesting 46mm watches I’ve ever worn and will continue to wear in the future. There are a few Chinese watch brands such as Seagull, Shanghai and Beijing that are known to watch enthusiasts and collectors. These brands have been producing quality watches with very affordable prices mainly for the domestic market. CIGA is certainly a newcomer with greater ambition, aspiring to follow the footsteps of Huawei and DJI (top drone maker) who are both headquartered in Shenzhen as well. Admittedly, I was a little confused by this when I first opened the watch. Until I flipped it over and peeked at the movement, I wasn’t sure if I got it up and running or not. Unfortunately, the Blue Planet only has a water resistance of 3 ATM. I would love to see what the sapphire crystal over the globe looks like underwater, but not at the expense of the watch’s functionality. But the water resistance is fitting for the design. This is a statement watch, not a tool watch. In the arenas it’s best worn in, this level of water resistance is plenty. A feminine evolution inspired by the CIGA Design Blue Planet, the Challenge Watch Prize Winner of 2021 GPHG Time originates from the earth revolution and rotation. A circle of the earth rotation represents a day in our lives, just like the earth engravement inside the dial, rotating hour by hour until the day past. lnjectlon molding: The ceramic powder is then injected into a mold that has the desired shape of the watch case.

On the wrist, the CIGA Design Blue Planet wears slightly smaller than its actual size and more like a 42-43 mm watch. The light titanium construction of the watch as well as its rounded pebbled-shape case, makes for a very comfortable watch to wear. Definitely a conversation timepiece wherever you go. Now, it does take some time for one to get adjusted on how to read the time on this watch.
