About this deal

The case itself is perplexing, the author pulling countless suspects into our path, including Hannah's host, and the victims Aunt, Ella. The clues are slowly and carefully revealed, but in a small, close-knit, town like Húsafjöður, nothing stays a quiet for long, and it's fair to say that conflict has a way of finding Hannah. I loved the way on which Jenny Lund Madsen brings the whole story to life. Setting is key and the town's short days and very long nights add to the sense of unease that ebbs and flows like the tide. The author keeps the action and the story flowing, and the tension high, especially towards the end which is as filled with emotion as it is high drama. It's a fitting conclusion to a story that is underpinned by loss. But as to whether Hannah is able to win her bet with Jørn, you'll only know if you read the book. In the far Northern Hemisphere, the small town of Barrow, Alaska, experiences a solid month of darkness every year. Though most of the residents head south for the winter, some townspeople remain behind. However, those that stay regret their decision when, one year, hungry vampires descend on Barrow to feed. Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his wife (Melissa George) and a dwindling band of survivors must try to last until dawn breaks over Barrow's monthlong twilight.

Jørn revels in tormenting Hannah and it makes for entertaining reading. In the heat of the moment Hannah proclaims that any idiot can write a book and paints herself into a corner. Within a month, she has to complete a crime novel, and she will learn that it’s not quite as easy as she thinks.A skilful, witty mash-up, playing with tropes of romantic fiction (yes, that popular genre writer turns up in the village and is not so bad after all) and crime fiction (closed community, dark secrets) … really entertaining’ Aly Monroe Het boek leest erg vlot, en wist me ook zeker te pakken. DAYS OF NIGHT: DARK DAYS" (Blu-ray Review)". Fangoria.com. 2010-10-03. Archived from the original on 2012-06-03 . Retrieved 2010-12-26.

When she expresses her contempt for genre fiction, Hanna is publicly challenged to write a crime novel in thirty days. Scared that she will lose face, she accepts, and her editor sends her to Húsafjöður – a quiet, tight-knit village in Iceland, filled with colorful local characters – for inspiration. At first, I didn’t get along very well with Hannah. She seemed to have both low self esteem and a superiority complex. She writes Literature, don’t you know. Which is infinitely better than popular genres for the masses, obviously. Hate is too strong a word but it was definitely dislike at first sight. However, as the story progressed, I warmed to her, and I also feel like she makes a huge character arc throughout the book. Dark and atmospheric … a bleak and beautiful evocation of Iceland, and Hannah is a pitch-perfect depiction of the bombastic neurosis that we writers know so very well’ Harriet TyceA snobbish Danish literary author is challenged to write a crime novel in thirty days, travelling to a small village in Iceland for inspiration, and then a body appears … an atmospheric, darkly funny, twisty debut thriller, first in an addictive new series. Thirty Days of Darkness is a brilliant début and Jenny Lund Madsen is a breath of fresh air on the crime novel scene,” said Hersi Smith. “We cannot wait for Orenda Books to introduce English-speaking readers to this darkly funny and deeply original Nordic Noir.”

I felt drawn to Thirty Days of Darkness from the start. I loved the cover (did you spot Hannah in the window?) and of course the premise, which made me expect a Nordic crime story a little off the beaten path. I started it one evening, trying it on for size, and found I was already 21% in when I first came up for air. Safe to say I found it a compelling read from the get-go and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Dreadful. When I read this kind of bad book, trying to be charitable,I sometimes wonder if they're not intended as a (badly done) parody, but no, it's just plain awful.DAYS OF NIGHT (15)". British Board of Film Classification. September 21, 2007 . Retrieved February 12, 2016. Its success resulted in a franchise that followed, including: a prequel miniseries, Blood Trails in 2007, a sequel miniseries, Dust to Dust in 2008, and a straight-to-home video sequel film Dark Days in 2010.

Here is where I thank Megan Turney profusely for another fantastic translation, bringing this little Danish gem to an English-speaking audience while still clearly conveying this author’s unique voice. I really enjoyed this book. There's a kind of 'Murder She Wrote' vibe to it all, with the author turned amateur detective angle, albeit that Hannah, whilst quite observant, is far more inept than Jessica Fletcher. She's just as big a magnet for trouble though and when trouble finds her, it likes to play a merry game. Fun for us as readers, a bit less fun for our protagonist. This is a classic murder mystery case, perhaps slightly too atmospheric and dark to be cost crime, but blending the suspense and intrigue with a good dose of humour, often at Hannah's expense. As the month comes to an end, with the sun due to rise, the vampires prepare to burn the fuel line running through the town, which will cause it to explode and destroy evidence of their presence. Realizing Stella is trapped and that he cannot beat the vampires in his current state, Eben injects himself with Billy's blood. Now a vampire, Eben confronts Marlow and after a vicious fight, manages to kill the vampire leader, causing the remaining vampires to flee. Eben and Stella go off to watch the sunrise together, sharing one last kiss. As the sun comes up, Eben's body burns to ash in Stella's arms. My love for "trapped in the arctic" horror really started with John Carpenter's The Thing. I love the snow and skiing, bundling up for that sudden blast of cold as you leave your very comfortable and toasty "temporary" abode. I think these type of movies turn that environment on its head, taking away those comforts and then having something terrifying outside to worry about.Viktor, the town’s only policeman, won’t divulge anything about Thor’s death, but Hannah takes extreme interest because the events might make excellent material for her novel. At first he humours her but soon Viktor loses his patience, especially when Hannah becomes close to his wife, Margrét. Hilariously scathing. Satirises genre fiction while creating a first-class example of it, full of suspects, red herrings and twists … wit and originality make it a joy to read’ Mark Sanderson, The Times CRIME BOOK OF THE MONTH Herefter flyttes handlingen til Island og et lille, afsondret lokalsamfund, hvor krimiplottet for alvor tager sin begyndelse.
