This book is perfectly fine! I think if I were a teen who loves old school murder mysteries, this would be a fun read. It's a little campy, but in a fun way, and its inclusive cast is a welcome update on the classics. The plotting was cleverly character and timeline driven to maximum effect, there are twists and turns in the narrative but they are more of character than mystery – the final moments resonate unexpectedly and leave you with a deeply discombobulated feeling of unease. I loved it.

This book was well written, kept me reading with the twists and turns as to who the killer was. This is one I would recommend to those liking a good thriller of a mystery! The possibility of romance is hinted at throughout with two men vying for Nell's attention, but she manages to get offside of both of them at various times. Despite those quibbles, I found myself looking for more opportunities to listen to the book rather than read my physical one. I got home from work one evening and immediately cleaned the kitchen! The story was engaging and of course, Kristen Atherton’s excellent narration helped. I was listening to it through my library’s digital loans app, and it was the first time in a long time I didn’t need to extend a loan beyond the initial 14-day period.

MY THOUGHTS: A Murder of Crows is a nice cosy mystery with a twist - Lady Eleanor Ward-Beaumont, heiress, to a few select people; Dr Nell Ward, ecologist, to everyone else.

A Murder of Crows was an enjoyable read, revolving around a British ecologist’s efforts to extricate herself from suspicion of murder. Don't go into A Murder of Crows expecting a tea and crumpets in front of the fire type of cosy; it's more hiking boots, waterproofs and bats, with the occasional flute of champagne. There are no 'cute' plays on words - excuse my sigh of relief - but you will learn a lot about bats. And Nell is quite adept at using her ecological survey equipment for surveillance on murder suspects. Delusion and illusion obscure truth and reality in this suspenseful, intricate story of dysfunction in families and friendships, and of interconnected secretive webs of pretence and deceit that have tragic circumstances for the residents of a small Scottish village near Loch Ness.
The second thing I found, if not confusing perhaps a little passé, was that Nell has a secret identity. Although I don't think it is really a spoiler I will put it in spoilers to be safe. Nell is actually a member of the aristocracy (Lady Eleanor Ward-Beaumont), fabulously wealthy, and her family has an ex-SAS protection officer/chauffeur on hand because her mother is an MP who has received death threats. Now this all feels eerily familiar (but I'm too lazy to google it) and a bit of an excuse for Nell to be able to do anything she wants, no expense spared. This fifth book in the Robert Carey series starts where book four left off. It takes place in London and you cannot fault the way this author describes life in the capital during Elizabethan times. She also brings a few famous characters into play such as Will Shakespeare and Kit Marlowe. Filming began in December 1997, across Key West, Florida, Los Angeles, California, and New Orleans, Louisiana. It has been released on DVD.
