About this deal

On the theatrical version of the Battlestar Galactica pilot, this is the same disc released in 2012, cropped to 1.85:1, and compressed using the VC-1 codec. The image here is much softer than on the broadcast versions, possibly due to being from a different source and/or due to some digital manipulation such as edge enhancement and scrubbing, with waxy flesh tones and textures. As a Blu-ray Universal has provided a spectacular set, unparalleled in its presentation; picture and sound are absolutely top notch and there are enough extras to keep any fan happy for weeks and weeks. Audio Commentary: 'Crossroads: Parts 1 & 2' (Disc 5) – Another commentary for the season finale with actor Mark Sheppard. Each disc plays host to a wealth of deleted scenes with a combined run time of around fifty minutes. If you want more BSG this is one place to get it. Audio Commentary: 'Unfinished Business' (Disc 2) – Commentary with stars Grace Park and Tahmoh Penikett.

In terms of Blu-ray extras, most (but not all) of disc-based from Universal’s previous DVD release has carried over here. Missing from the original DVD is the magazine size booklet, the VFX overview with John Dykstra, and the Sci-Fi channel special. Also absent (unsurprisingly) from the German Blu-ray release are the German language Super-8 cuts and trailers, and the lawyer-killing Battlestar discussion panel footage from the 2003 25th anniversary convention. Had Universal wanted to make this set truly definitive, they would have included at least the new scenes shot with body doubles and awkward voiceovers done for the telemovie version of the standalone episodes meant for UHF syndication. The most notable of which, Experiment in Terra, had an entirely new intro shot as detailed here. Note: With the exception of 'Battlestar Galactica: Remastered', all the bonus featured listed below are duplicated on both the widescreen and full frame versions of the original series discs. There are no bonus materials on either the 'Galactica 1980' discs or the 35th Anniversary theatrical version disc. Season 4.5: The Untold Story - Untold (SD, Disc 2, 2 minutes) – A television preview for season 4.5.Deleted Scenes (SD, Disc 1, 12 minutes) – Deleted scenes from episodes 'He That Believeth in Me,' 'Six of One,' 'That Ties That Bind,' 'Escape Velocity,' 'The Road Less Traveled.'

Video: 1.85:1; Audio: English 5.1 DTS-HD MA, Japanese, French, Italian, German, Castilian Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin Spanish 2.0 DTS; Subtitles: Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Castilian Spanish, Portuguese, Latin Spanish, Czech, Danisk, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Thai, Tiurkish, and Simplified Chinese ORIGINAL TV SERIES & GALACTICA 1980: In their infinite wisdom, the folks over at Universal believe that no one but loyal fans and purists would ever want to see 'Battlestar Galactica' is its original full frame format (which, by the way, are available in the larger, more expensive Definitive Collection should you wish to splurge for that version), so as part of this remastering of the series, they've created a brand-new 1.78:1 widescreen version of each episode. Despite losing information at the top and bottom of each scene, the widescreen episodes are actually pretty well framed and I was surprised at how good most (but not all) of the series works in the new format.Remembering Battlestar Galactica - a 45-minute retrospective documentary featuring cast and crew on the making of the series Battlestar Galactica - The 125-minute theatrical edit of the premiere episode "Saga of a Star World" As for the rest of Random Space Media’s Blu-ray set, the 10-part Face of the Enemy webisode series is also missing from the reboot series discs, just as they were on the US Blu-ray release (the only place you can currently find them is on the Japanese BD re-issue of Battlestar Galactica: Season Four— available here). Also, it should be noted that the original Battlestar Galactica Blu-rays are the 1.33:1 presentations as originally broadcast on ABC TV in the US (the reframed 1.78:1 presentations are not included and also not missed).

Remembering 'Battlestar Galactica' (SD, 45 min.) – Ported over from the 2003 DVD release, this entertaining retrospective on the show includes comments from Glen A. Larson and members of the cast, including Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, and Hebert Jefferson, Jr.Deleted Scenes (SD, Disc 4, 19 minutes) – Deleted scenes from episodes 'Taking a Break from All Your Worries,' 'The Woman King,' 'A Day in the Life,' 'Dirty Hands, and 'Maelstrom.' Audio Commentary: 'Revelations' (Disc 2) – Commentary with Ronald D. Moore, David Weddle, Bradley Thompson, and editor Julius Ramsay. Comparing the 4x3 HD presentation in Universal’s new box set to the German release, I would say that it’s almost certainly the same master and that no new remastering was done for 4x3. Not that it was really necessary. As the Koch release proved, those masters look and sound great already. While it looks like a little bit of dirt and damage removal may have been done, the full frame set is a superior version of Galactica that carries my top recommendation. Deleted Scenes (SD, Disc 4, 18 minutes) – The last disc of this season has deleted scenes from episodes 'Colonial Day,' and 'Kobol's Last Gleaming: Parts 1 & 2.'
