About this deal

Was this an adult fairy tale, fable, fantasy, historical fiction or what ? It was all of the above and so skillfully done that it made complete and utter sense as I was reading. Can you begin a novel with your climax and still have a surprising twist at the end/beginning? Ellis can, and does, in this well-crafted thriller.” For all intents and purposes it was her debut. She had a short book published 14 years before hand by a tiny local press , the equivalent of a self published book. Karen Maitland, who also writes as KJ Maitland, lives in the beautiful county of Devon and has a doctorate in psycholinguists.

Perhaps that is where our choice lies -- in determining how we will meet the inevitable end of things, and how we will greet each new beginning.” You cruel woman Maria!! This is one of my all time favorite stories and I wouldn't change a thing! I loved the sense of inevitability Maitland’s novel is a juicy concoction of a medieval historical fiction novel mixed with spiritualism, magic, and mystery dumped into a pot of a fairy tale/fable core served to adults versus the Disney crowd (fear not: it is not a fantasy novel and more on the historical fiction end). “Company of Liars” transports the reader to a dark, rainy, medieval forest on foot with the many characters of the story despite if the sun is shining outside your own window. One can almost hear the thunder clap. “Company of Liars” has a simple plot (various travelers come together by twists of fate passing through England); and yet the novel is gripping and quite entertaining with strong visuals and emotional threads.Sorry for the rant, this is probably not about this book, but about historical fiction in general. We want characters to be like us in some ways and to have similar values, but then the mindset of the period gets a bit confused. In the Company of Liars is a truly original thriller, strikingly fresh and unpredictable. Told in chronological reverse, from its enigmatic end to its brilliant beginning, the novel is centered on a woman who is on trial for murder—Allison Pagone, a mother caught between competing forces, each represented by someone who may not care if the pressure kills her in the end. A prosecutor wants Allison convicted and put on death row. An FBI agent believes she can squeeze her into ratting on her family. A daughter and an ex-husband need to save their own skins. And circling them all: a group who would prefer to eliminate her quietly and anonymously, but who also are not what they seem. And the characters in this book felt just like XXI century people - and probably that's one of the reasons they seemed so likeable: you can identify with them! This novel vividly evokes the landscape of 14th-century England without putting too many 21st-century interpretations on actions and events." - Library Journal.

Ellis keeps us in suspense and curious about Pagone, mostly by having us see her involvement in plots and crimes through the eyes of determined FBI agent Jane McCoy. There’s also enough high-level corruption to keep a roomful of paranoid investigators busy. Not sure if I would like to read a sequel to this book as I don't know where the author could take it.Due to the nature of the book, there is not much I can tell you about the plot without spoiling it. I'll just say that it centers around Allison Pagone, a best-selling author who is standing trial for the murder of her boyfriend, Sam Dillon, and who is found dead in her bathtub ... an apparent suicide. It also features Allison's ex-husband, Mateo, her daughter, Jessica, the FBI ... and a terrorist organization. There are several sub-plots going on simultaneously, and it as the truth is slowly revealed, the reader realizes that nearly nothing is as it seems. Each character has his or her own perception of the reality of the situation, his or her own motives for solving the murder and/or taking the blame for it. That's about as far as I can go in describing it. The preceding paragraph makes much more sense once you have read the book. I don't want to spoil anything!) Maitland’s strength of presenting the facts of medieval life in a subtle manner is quite evident in the novel. Readers learn about the time period in a natural and amusing way. Maitland obviously conducted research for “Company of Liars” instead of taking a pure fictional route. Ellis, an Edgar Award-winning novelist, is bound to find more fans with this thrilling novel that holds your attention from end to beginning. You’ll be happy you spent time In the Company Of Liars.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. I agree that it feels more like historical fiction only to change to horror/thriller. I had a big dose of the heebie jeebies reading the last few chapters.
