About this deal

Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for giving me an e-book copy of this novel for a review. I liked Bream's interpretation of David's and Bathsheba's loss of their first born son, and of David's broken heartedness. That he would go to Bathsheba, again, and for Solomon to be born of that (re)union....given the name that means "Peace." God Bless, Bathsheba, in that she made sure Solomon would "find his way to the throne" (p 132). This is the story of how one young woman faces the world without a mother who was absent too much even when she was alive. And how a writer perseveres and finds her voice despite the weight of student loans, no health insurance, narcissistic lovers and daily toil as a restaurant waitress in a wealthy town. The imagery is beautiful, and the details have the raw clank of truth. First of all pay attention to the smaller print on the title. Unlike the bold prints imply, this book doesn't really focus on Mothers and Daughters of the Bible. What kind of woman tells all her secrets?” my mother continued, flabbergasted and disappointed in me. “Especially anything that has to do with your body making babies! I know a woman who had no ovaries when she got married. Her husband found out only years later that they couldn’t have children. The two of them are happy together still; they live in a big house, and have a cute dog.”

Mothers and Daughters is another excellent read from the pen of Erica James. I was so involved, I was talking to the characters, telling them what they should or shouldn’t do! I wasn’t too fussed on Martha to start with, but she grew on me – Willow was a delight, although she let herself be walked over. And Naomi was pretty much perfect – secrets and all! Mothers and Daughters is a novel I highly recommend. I don’t often come across a book in which I find so many of the characters empathetic. At the same time, the situations rang true to life and I could imagine my sisters, or my daughters reacting similarly.

Even If Your Heart Would Listen: Losing My Daughter to Heroin by Elise Schiller

Jenna Metcalfe has been searching for her mother for years since her mysterious disappearance; she simply vanished in the wake of a tragic accident at the elephant sanctuary where she’d been studying the majestic creatures. Jenna doesn’t believe for one second that her mother would choose to abandon her. She hires a psychic and a private detective to try and piece together what really happened. My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout In the New Testament, Christian Scriptures, reading about Mary, the details shared were amazing, and right there, in words I had read, but did not quite embrace. Bream shared beautifully. (Between Bream's interpretation and watching the first two seasons of THE CHOSEN, I feel "baptized" in powerful words and feelings.) The other niggle was the way one of the characters were dealt with at the end. They had become an inconvenience and it seems as though the author didn’t really know what to do with them. I really enjoyed this book. The cover was the first thing which made me want to read it and it is the perfect introduction to the beautiful story.

Mothers and Daughters by Erica James | Waterstones

It's a story about family relationships, mostly those between mother and daughters and the different personalities they have. Naomi is the mum, recently widowed, so trying to begin a new life for herself now that her main priority is herself. Martha and Willow are her 2 daughters, both very different in character but dealing with their own issues along with the grief of losing their father. She did not explain it; she could not. It was not a matter of living alone, though in her case this had been necessary. The freedom she meant was self-conquest. It was not a natural state. It was meant only for those who would risk everything for it, who were aware that without it life is only appetites until the teeth are gone.” Mothers and Daughter is both a compelling and hugely relatable family drama centred around recently widowed sixty-three-year-old Naomi and her thirty-something adult daughters, Martha and Willow, as they move forward with their lives. Just over two years ago, Naomi’s husband, Colin, and the father of both her daughters, died suddenly leaving her a widow in the Tilsham cottage the family once shared. Having rebuilt her life and reconnected by random chance with Ellis, a friend from university, Naomi is ready to start afresh but worried about both her daughter’s reaction to a new man, especially that of Martha who idolised her father. The truth of the marriage and the real man behind Colin’s bonhomie is something that Naomi has kept from both her daughters, but as Martha and Naomi each meet Ellis, they are harbouring concerns of their own.. Nikki Eaton is a reporter for a small town newspaper in her thirties living life on her terms. When her widowed mother, Gwen is killed in a random act of violence, the loss impacts Nikki more than she ever saw coming. The novel chronicles the year following her mother’s death as Nikki grieves this sudden loss and tries to make sense of the tragedy. Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou My favorite thing about this book was breaking apart these well known stories (at least imo), and digging into these people's heads. It really gave me a greater appreciation for some of them, and cleared up questions I haven't bothered to ask (but definitely wondered).Instead we get a collaboration of stories featuring, Mothers & Daughters, Fathers & Daughters, and Mothers & Sons, and then a brief section on Miracles & Mothers. The first lesson every child of Athena learned: Mom was the best at everything, and you should never, ever suggest otherwise.” As she and her best friend study for the Baccalaureate exams that will determine their futures, Margot is seduced by a journalist and her husband into sharing the secrets of her family life. When the story goes public, a string of events that no one could have expected unfolds. And it becomes essential to understand exactly what family, parenthood, loyalty and devotion really mean. Although the relationship between the three women is at the heart of the story, other relationships are bought under the spotlight including marital problems, the issues facing blended families, control and abuse and deciding how much of your real self that you let others see.

Mothers and Daughters: From the Sunday Times bestselling

Whilst the three women share a very close relationship, there are things that are kept hidden, especially by Naomi. Her daughters would like her to sell up and move to London to be near them. Naomi hasn’t told them about Ellis; a long-lost friend who has recently moved in next door and is fast becoming much more than just a friend. A touching and honest portrayal of a mother and her two daughters dealing with that thing called life. Author Peggy Orenstein is a journalist who had built a career writing about girls and women when she learned she was pregnant with a daughter. She was terrified; she was supposed to be an expert on girls behavior, what if she couldn’t raise, as she put it, an ideal daughter? In this eye-opening nonfiction read full of facts about the “princess mania” in media and merchandising (bruuuuuh Disney) and honest insight from a conflicted new mother, Orenstein examines what it means to raise a daughter who is aware of her femininity without being encumbered by it. Turns out this is quite the undertaking. Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple Growing up in a family with an elder sister I can totally relate to this story. Martha could easily be my sister and Willow could easily be me. The similarities had me shaking my head at times. I loved how the characters were so relatable and so well written. While attempting to be the best mother she can be, Ashley Keller isn't doing so well. She thinks she'll finally be the mother she's always wanted to be after signing up for the Motherhood Better boot camp. Author of The Honest Toddler takes a look at the demands that society places on mothers and gives the idea of being a great mother doesn't require you to be perfect. The Daughter by Lucy DawsonThe protagonist has lost her mother to suicide and is engulfed in grief. At the heart of the story is her female friend, another motherless daughter (although for a different reason). Of course there are men in the mix – but the fundamental issue that drives the story is this: what does it mean to be a mother? And how does one survive without one? Small wonder that so many brilliant novels penned by women have been narratives about being a mother to a daughter – or vice versa. The weight of expectations, the need to separate, the fierce love, the unspoken rivalries, the lost mothers, the missing daughters – grief, devotion, disappointment and joy are all entangled in a way that only the best writers can illuminate. 18 Best Novels to Read Now about Mothers, Daughters and their relationships After being transferred from Haiti to New York to reconcile with her mother, Sophie finds secrets that no 12-year-old should have access to.
