About this deal

Growing up in the 1980s, a much derided decade, I've always been an advocate of pop: it's not a dirty word! & the early 1980s, post-Abba/post-Bowie/post-Chic/post-Moroder/post-Roxy, was an era when pop was at its most inventive. From ABC's The Lexicon of Love to Scritti Politti's The Sweetest Girl, from Cabaret Voltaire's Red Mecca to Simple Minds' New Gold Dream, from The Human League's Dare! to Prince's Controversy etc- this was an era of wild abandon alluded to on the recent compilation 'Death Disco'. Associates' Sulk is probably the masterpiece of the era, an album that on one hand was perfect pop, and on the other wildly experimental. This is the album that just edges out other contenders for greatest album of the era- Sorry for Laughing, The Correct Use of Soap, A Kiss in the Dreamhouse, Avalon, Climate of Hunter, New Gold Dream... LP, Album, Reissue , Blue; CD, Album, Reissue; 2×CD; CD, Single, Limited Edition, Promo; All Media, Deluxe Edition, Remastered I’ve often struggled with the oft asked question about naming your top 10 albums of all time, as this can change by the day depending on my mood. However, on listening to this extraordinarily unique and arresting album time and again over the last few weeks, I decided that not only should this album always be in that top ten, but in fact, if I was to choose only one album that I had to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be hard to see past Sulk. Kellman, Andy. "White Car in Germany – The Associates: Song Review". AllMusic . Retrieved 18 July 2016. Note: the versions of "And Then I Read a Book" and "Australia" are different on the 2000 and 2016 releases.

so it was just me and Hedges in the studio so I did the keyboard parts to five songs, various layers of piano and synth. In July, BMG will issue a special large format 3CD+vinyl LP 40th anniversary deluxe edition of The Associates‘ 1982 album Sulk. Voluntary Wishes, Swapit Production" – The instrumental mix of “Australia” that was B-side to "18 Carat Love Affair".A. G. It’s You Again" – The alternate mix of “Arrogance Gave Him Up” from the 12″ of "Club Country". In between these two glorious instrumentals were seven original mind blowing compositions and a stunning version of Gloomy Sunday, an all too prescient choice considering what fate was ultimately to befall the gentle, softly spoken singer. Seriously beautiful pressing! For some reason a lot of UK pressed records sounds better than other countries same year pressing.... Reynolds, Simon (2 April 2009). The US tour had been set up but then Bill announced that he didn’t want to do it and derailed everything. He said, “Man, this whole touring thing, I just don’t like it… but we could just be a studio band.” I said, “No, Bill, you’re perfectly capable of singing live and people come to see us primarily because of you so we can’t be a studio band.” He just couldn’t Vote up content that is on-topic, within the rules/guidelines, and will likely stay relevant long-term. Then there is Sulk, on which the group’s splendour is fully realised. It is ornate, unsettling, joyous and playful. For years, Dempsey worried it had become unlistenable, thanks to unsympathetic mastering. “You’d take it into the master room, and the guy looks at his meter and goes white; he doesn’t know what to do with it, and usually he would err on the side of caution.” Party Fears Two" (2000 V2 Promo mix) – This 5:12 mix appeared only on the 2000 Associates promo should have been included. The Associates are a band which was, and is, hard to define or pigeonhole, dipping a toe in post punk, experimenting with electronics and a variety of weird and wonderful instruments, some of their songs dripping with addictive pop hooks, while others verging on melancholic torch songs and the avant grade. The bands appeal stretched to a wide range of my peers in a variety of subcultures from my youth from punks to goths to pop music fans, their appeal was universal having created a band which intrigued and delighted in equal measure. A Young Person's Guide To: Associates – Heart Of Glass". Postpunkmonk.com. 10 October 2014 . Retrieved 16 June 2021. Then there is the album closer, Nothing In Something Particular, a sweeping string laden work of genius that was the instrumental version of the later single 18 Carat Love Affair, a soulful sound almost intentionally leaving the listener on tenterhooks as to what would be coming next. Mind Blowing Tributes to Rankine have already begun to flood in. Broadcaster Vic Galloway said his death was “incredibly sad news.”

Robert Dimery; Michael Lydon (7 February 2006). 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: Revised and Updated Edition. Universe. ISBN 0-7893-1371-5. Michael was a very distinctive bass player and the way Bill and I telepathically worked, bouncing off each other, he was very good at just slotting in the middle without interrupting. Murphy was Australian and quite a character. In all the time that we played live together, he never bought a drink and if you went to a party with him, he would start rummaging through the bins looking for something to eat. When we were rehearsing, he would have the NME spread out on his floor tom and he’d be reading it as we were playing. His sons Callum and Hamish Rankine announced the 64-year-old’s death on Tuesday January 3. “He died peacefully at home shortly after spending Christmas with his family,” the family’s statement read. “He was a beautiful, kind and loving man who we will miss dearly.”Rankine left the band in 1982 and established himself as a producer, working with artists such as Paul Haig and the Cocteau Twins. In 1986 he started a solo career and recorded three albums. Random Jukebox: the Associates cover Blondie's Heart of Glass". Stevepafford.com. 5 September 2018 . Retrieved 16 June 2021.
