This Flex Smart model has tough but widely-spaced silicone bristles on its brush head, allowing it to clean effectively without trapping dirt and water between the bristles. The brush head itself is flexible and ergonomically shaped, allowing it to move smoothly over the bowl and clean thoroughly, getting into hard to reach nooks and crannies. The long, kinked handle also makes it easier to clean, while making sure your hand never has to get too perilously close to the bowl you’re cleaning. The Simplehuman Toilet Brush with Caddy was sturdy, but it was also quite uncomfortable to hold and difficult to maneuver during cleaning. It didn’t have an impressive performance either— we found it smeared the clay mask around rather than actually cleaning it.

Cleaning: We cleaned at least two different toilets with each of our brushes and rated the overall experience on a scale from one to four stars, with one for “made cleaning worse” and four for “made cleaning great.” We considered how long it took for us to reach all areas of the toilet bowl, whether we had difficulty with hard-to-reach spots and to account for brush coverage, how much of the toilet-bowl cleaner was left untouched. The heads were easy to switch out without a mess. It took a bit of effort to attach the extension to the handle, but it wasn’t difficult. We couldn’t get the storage hook to fasten the brush properly to hang it though, so storage could be an issue. The toilet brush was comfortable to hold, but because there was no contour to the handle, the grip felt a bit slippery. The brush itself fits nicely in the slot in the base, but there is a bit of a learning curve with remembering to press the button at the tip of the handle to remove it. Yes; Mounting style: Free standing After spreading a sunflower butter paste onto the inside of a toilet bowl and allowing it to air dry for 20 minutes, each brush was used to clean the bowl with no additional toilet bowl cleaner (except for the Clorox ToiletWand, which has cleaner built into the scrubbing head). We found it comfortable to grip the long handle during cleaning. Even when applying pressure, the bristles didn’t scratch the toilet bowl. A few swishes of clean water were all it took to clean off the brush, though it will likely need a deeper clean to get into those dense bristles.

We noted how much and where clay mask residue was left in the toilet bowl with each brush. Handle material and length: A toilet brush’s handle can make the difference between a good and great brush. The handle should be stiff enough to help you scrub, but it also shouldn’t get in your way. Handles that are too long, too short or that bend at odd angles can make the cleaning process harder. The scrub head left some small smear marks on the porcelain, but otherwise, we saw no scratches. The scrub head proved to be quite sturdy—it didn’t detach from the handle during use and it didn’t disintegrate as we thought it might. The used head comes off very easily—just press the button to release the sponge head into the trash. Since the shape is so different to a standard brush you’ll have to adjust your cleaning technique somewhat, but it’s well worth the effort for the added toilet cleanliness and brush longevity. The stand is also pretty good, if a little lightweight, and there’s an option to mount it onto the wall using a strong adhesive pad. Wall mounted or not, the stand comes in three parts, so is simple to take apart and clean, and it has good ventilation at the base. Drip tray: Damp brushes are the worst for harbouring bacteria and bad smells, so having a stand that collects all the drips is integral for keeping your brush clean for as long as possible.
