About this deal

This is far less hit-and-miss than using the presets as it really does tailor the speakers to the room they are in. It’sall done via a series of audio chirps played through each speaker via a set process of placing the mic in four positions around where your head would be. Altogether there is 100W of output, hitting 103dB SPL. The onboard DSP allows for phase-coherency across the full frequency spectrum – a key feature of the unit, and one which makes the this speaker brutally ‘honest’. It really is clinical with your mixes, taking imaging to a level that we’d expect to hear from monitors at three times the price.

At the end of the day, that’s all you can hope for in a monitoring system—confidence and trust in what you’re hearing. If it manages to simultaneously get you excited to mix and listen to music every day, that’s an even bigger win. These are pretty neutral. They won't make bad recordings sound good, and they aren't going to give you more than is there in the source. You essentially get two ways to adjust the frequency response of the Precision range to deliver a flat response according to their surroundings. Both of these involve connecting up the X-Monitor software running on your Mac or PC to each speaker via USB. You can choose from a selection of preset frequency curves (see picture above) and the speakers will then raise or lowerparts of the frequency range accordingly. Looks are subjective, but I think they look pretty great in person. Subdued, with relatively benign branding (I wish there wasn't any, but at least the iLoud logo is pretty low-key and located on the side of the cabinet instead of the face). They don't call attention to themselves in the way that many nearfields/mini-monitors do, but the vibe is more professional or computer accessory than it is traditional hi-fi.

I wouldn’t use the IK Multimedia MTM monitors for super loud listening. They’re not made for that. As expected, cranking up the volume caused the red LED to flash, and there was obvious distortion. I K Multimedia took the budget monitor market by storm with the ‘physics defying’ iLoud Micro and MTM monitors. I reviewed the iLoud MTM monitors in our September 2019 issue, and they haven’t left the meter bridge in the A Room at Coupe Studios (Boulder, CO) ever since! It’s no surprise that IK Multimedia has decided to expand the lineup, taking everything that made the Micro and MTM so popular and amping (pun intended) them up to the next level. Precision Overview It would be better if you are close to MTM. I have tasted it many times that it is very effective between 30-60 cm. If you can put the device on a stand, you will not feel the low vibrations it creates and you will not be mistaken. While the Precision 5 also performed admirably in the larger control room environment, they did feel a tad underpowered for the space. So, to give the Precision 5 a more accurate representation of a real-world room they’d typically be set up in, I decided to put them through the paces at my (much smaller) home studio. Desktop music making specialist IK Multimedia has stepped into the pro market with its new monitors, but should you step up with them?

The calibration setting—FLAT by default—offers options of a preset DESK filter that bumps the lower midrange or a saved user-calibrated setting. This can be created using the ARC System 3 calibration software or triggered without software by holding the calibration button down for three seconds. Please Standby Moving away from the sweet spot brought about the expected changes in phase and image clarity, but didn’t have much of an effect on the overall tone. Virtual tests can't be a ground for decision making but they helped me notice a solution for a problem I faced many times. The problem I'm talking about is translatability of your mixes. These Precision 6s really do deliver extra detail over and above our very decent (albeit cheaper) reference monitors. We were impressed not only with the extras we were getting across the frequency range in our mixes but also the tightness – the fast response of the speakers to the transients in the music. Predicted in-room response is for far field listening in a typical room so not as applicable to monitors on a desk:
