Insta360 might be best known for its 360-degree cameras but, thanks to its modular and wearable cameras, it’s also making inroads into traditional action camera markets. The Insta360 Go 3 is the firm’s latest offering in this segment and it’s one of the cleverest action cameras I’ve ever seen. The star of the show, however, is the charging case, which Insta360 calls the “Action Pod”. Slot the camera into this and the Insta360 Go 3 turns into a GoPro clone, complete with a 2.2in articulating touchscreen and booster battery. A magnetic design and accessories allow you to mount the GO 3 anywhere, providing you with a multitude of creative possibilities, including but not limited to pets, helmets and fly-on-the-wall shots. FreeForm video is also worth a mention. It requires you to put together clips in the Insta360 app but captures the full circular view of the lens, not a rectangular frame. This gives you the flexibility to pull out a 1440p frame at 16:9, 9:16, or 1:1 ratios for different social platforms. Running every FreeForm clip through an editing process is inconvenient, but creators who need to deliver clips for both widescreen and vertical devices might still find it worthwhile. The Go 3's light weight means it can be magnetically mounted wherever you find a compatible metal surface. While the Action Pod is magnetic, too, it's too heavy to mount sideways. Another difference between the ways you can expect to use the Go 3 and its ActionPod comes in the form of water resistance. While the Go 3 is waterproof up to 5m, the Action Pod is only splash-proof, so can't be submerged. This tough aluminium flight case has a well-padded interior allowing your Insta360 GO 3 to fit snuggly into the case, providing additional protection to your action camera when you’re on the move. Given the camera's price, I was impressed with the selection of accessories it ships with, so I put them to the test too. It was great to get a sense of how the Go 3 changes a filming workflow thanks to its magnetic mounting and wireless ActionPod compared to traditional action cameras.

Video caps out at 2.7K, while the highest resolution photos are 1:1 aspect ratio, 2560 x 2560 stills. For 4K filmmakers who want to splice action camera footage into their masterpieces, these low resolutions won't fit the bill. For casual action adventurers and family photographers and vloggers, though, the Insta360 Go 3 could be a perfect tool.

Small Camera Fans Take Note

The Insta360 Go 3 is not your usual GoPro-style camera. The main camera part is contained within a tiny, thumb-sized unit which is small enough to be mounted in a number of different ways. Yes, the Insta360 GO 3 can record video in fantastic 2.7k. How much memory does the Insta360 GO 3 have? As a bonus, though, the Insta360 Go 3 provides a wide selection of shooting modes, ranging from the usual timeshift, interval and slow motion modes, through to the new Freeform, which allows you to capture video that can be cropped to horizontal or vertical video modes in post. Also worth noting is that Insta360 has added a new loop mode, which makes this camera useful for anyone who wants to use the camera as a kind of cycling dashcam.
