Running Power is a different way of measuring your efficiency which is gaining popularity within trail running where you can´t use you pace to measure efficiency in the same way as you do when you are running on road. With all that in mind, you can use heart-rate zones to monitor your real-time progress, ensuring that you stay in your optimum sweet spot. I’ve owned “all the HRMs” and my experience mirrors yours: *any* Garmin HRM that relied on screws to secure the battery door would fail after one or two battery replacements, or within a couple of years. However, given its slightly constrictive nature, this is unlikely to be a popular option for more casual users.

The Tickr X is the perfect fitness tracker if you want to pay close attention to your form, offering additional tracking and cadence data that will be hugely beneficial for indoor cyclists and runners. The Polar H10 has a 400-hour battery life and a single-activity memory, and it is also just comfortable to wear. One minor note though is that the HRM-PRO Plus is not going to be available in Australia, due to newish legislation that prohibits sale of coin-cell battery devices that are tool-less entry.Alternatively, you can connect the Frontier X to watches and fitness machines via BLE (no ANT+, sadly), although it's too expensive to be used only as an external heart rate monitor. Somewhat like the Apple ecosystem, the integration on the HRM-PRO with existing Garmin watches just works, versus trying to cobble together data offloading or other pieces requires more parts from 3rd party straps. My son has to change strings every other week or else they’ll become corroded and unplayable while I can get away with months before the strings just start to loose their tone and still look almost new.

The Garmin Connect App and all the advanced data you can find in the App, are reserved for Garmin products.This is interesting to me, as I usually get pretty good wrist-based data on my left wrist, but less so on my right wrist (where the FR255 was). It’ll track your heart rate as part of your 24×7 metrics, but you won’t see a specific ‘Run’ activity on Garmin, nor would it transmit such a thing to 3rd party apps.

In other words, if you’re after a chest-worn optical heart rate sensor to enhance your Peloton and Zwift sessions, you’re in the right place. For serious runners these are pretty exciting features, and the sort of thing brands like foot-pod maker Stryd wants a significant amount of money for. Like the HRM-TRI belt, you can also use HRM-PRO for any triathlon eller duathlon without having to change along the way. But, the major downside to the Wahoo TICKR X (2020), is that myself and many others have had a heck of a time with it and reliability.

For experienced runners, these are the sort of things that will help you check how well-put-together your form is, along with how well you maintain it throughout your run. Roughly speaking, that’s any recent Garmin Fenix/Epix series watch, Forerunner 245/255/645/745/945/955 watch, or any of the Fenix variants. But ultimately, only time will tell if this reduces the battery compartment issues some had with the screwdriver/o-ring situation on the older HRM-PRO straps.
