What if she makes you hold hands in the cinema, won’t stop playing on the PlayStation, has custard on her dress and insists on you telling her a bedtime story? His spectacular portfolio of pictures captures a variety of cloud forms and shapes, ranging from cottony-soft cumulus clouds to frightening, whirling funnels, as well as a number of optical effects seen in the heavens above. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal.

The Book of Clouds is an introduction to this world – and the guide you’ll want by your side to help you understand it. If you look up on a cloudy day, you’ll see a whole new surprising world above you – the world of clouds! The Cloudspotter’s Guide: The Science, History, and Culture of Clouds by Gavin Pretor-Pinney touches on the science, history, and culture of clouds. But with each of those changes and each new cloud formation, the sky is letting you know what to expect when it comes to the weather. Not only has her best friend gone off and found another entirely different best friend, but since her grandad moved in, all her mum’s time seems to be occupied with looking after him. A book that’s meant to be uplifting and inspirational can serve as the perfect antidote to help you get back into a place where you remember that life is so much bigger than just what you see in front of you. Also, the way his mother described this whole journey of her child with hope and tragedy is beyond my understanding. The book is, on one level, an ambitious re-writing — a re-synthesis, even — of concepts of media and culture.

Eisendrath holds out her manuscript—an infinite moment passes—and Woolf takes it and begins to read.Like WG Sebald reborn as a young woman, she walks the city streets: crossing Alexanderplatz, a hive of regeneration bristling with cranes; picking through the flea markets flooded with East German kitsch; enjoying the meditative "thought-ironing excursion" of the S-Bahn that swoops through the city, offering "old and new, logic and impulse, grit and glamour, all blurred into one long thread".

This makes it sound like a picture book with a moral (which can be terribly patronizing), but it doesn’t feel like that at all. Remembering those we have lost is an important part of dealing with our grief: this moving story leaves its reader with a heartfelt message of hope and healing. And once you’ve discovered all the names for clouds, you probably still haven’t considered what clouds dream about, or how they dance, or how rain sounds like piano chords. It was written by Gavin Pretor-Pinney, (who authored another book on this list) whose aim is to gift you with moments of contemplation as you appreciate the clouds in the book. Jonas, who would fall in love with Tatiana if she would let him, is a freelance meteorologist, living up among the clouds on the 18th floor of a towerblock.
