Description

This book is written as a poem and is a lovely way to help children and make them aware of marriage break-ups between their parents and that there are ways of coping and that it will all be alright. Separation is incredibly common amongst parents so this book will be good to use in classrooms to explore it and develop an understanding of it. His method for this isn't the usual response though: he looks for glue to stick his mum and dad together. The boy wonders if he is the reason why his parents no longer kiss and cuddle, but they reassure him that he’s not to blame. By telling the story from the perspective of a child, the story creates a sense of longing in the reader and allows them to be swept up in the narrative as if they were in the text themselves.

Wonderful job on showing how a divorce will feel for a kid, like his world, like his everything is also broken apart. Perhaps this would be a great story to talk about the effect of structure on the reader and the illusions that structure helps to create. The subject matter is an extremely sensitive one, as it talks about divorce and the hardships that a child can face when they find out that their parents are splitting up. This is the kind of book that should have a place in every class, as a teacher will not always know when a child is needing the kind of emotional reassurance it gives. Divorce can be one of the trickiest topics for children to understand and communicate their thoughts/feelings.

It would be a great recommendation to send home, or to read in a smaller, comfortable group, so that children feel they can ask questions, share their response and feelings and talk through these in a trusting environment. It softly and gently addresses what can be such a difficult subject with lighthearted illustrations and rhyming poetry.

Every Second Friday by Kiri Lightfoot and Ben Galbraith is another message book about divorce, this time dealing with children getting used to having two different homes. This can be used as a conversation started with those children in your class that are going through this tough situation. The child's concept of sticking his parents back together with glue is so down to earth and truly places the reader into the mindset of a young person desperate for his mum and dad to stay together. It's not really a book that young children who aren't going through divorcing parents would want to read - it'd ask more questions than it asks. I think this book could be a very useful in the classroom, and read to nursery or reception children because it deals with such a relevant topic that any of them could experience.

It is really heartwarming at the end, to see him realise that he still means the world to his parents and that he will always be loved by them; despite them no longer being together. This was a beautiful, a bit humorous, but also sad book about a boy and his parents who are going to separate. I also /loved/ the artistic concept that all the things around the child on each page were broken too. He goes on a hunt to try and find some glue to stick them back together but then realises that you cant find glue for the heart. Essentially, the little boy, who is trying to use an inanimate tool, to fix a very real, tangible problem, comes to find that some things in life you cannot fix.

It is important for him to look into the future and see that things will be okay and that they will always love him. I love how it tackles the emotions they must be feeling in a light hearted manner (rhyming couplets). Summary: A sensitive and helpful message book about a young child trying to come to terms with his parents' divorce. This is a good book to share with children who are in this positions to assure them that families can live apart and it will be okay. However in doing this, Gray only places the reader into the situation of the protagonist, wondering when their inner turmoil will be over. I am glad that the parents talked to him, that the parents made time to make sure he was fine, and that they explained everything to him. Beautiful book from a child’s perspective of handling divorce- really makes you think about how a child may see a divorce of parents. Although I think this story focused on parent separation in a nice way, I did feel like the ending was a bit abrupt.

The illustrations highlight how, to them, it can feel like their whole world is breaking and changing which gives the adult reader a perspective on how the process can feel very overwhelming for the child/children involved. This book will be a great book to have in my classroom to assist children when coming to terms with their parents splitting up! This changes the boy’s attitude towards what is happening to his family and he begins to embrace events more positively. This book is really important to share with children whose parents have or are in the process of splitting as well offering a sense of understanding to others.
